Resist the Future? or proceed towards it, trying to evolve it from within? there’s no easy answer. no wonder so many look backwards for answers. the death of the queen mum? i can’t dredge up a single thot on the matter except to quote at least one wise thing she once said to Woodrow Wyatt during the 1986 bomming of Libya: “It was a mistake. TRUTH SELLING LIKE HOT CAKES IN AMERICA Probably inspired by Michael Moore’s runaway success with Stupid White Men, and supported by Noam Chomsky, a fortnightly newspaper aimed at providing ‘real’ news of the Afghan Turkey Shoot is to be launched in America in April. Its editors (in San Francisco, wouldn’t you know!) have this crazy idea that the overground US media are providing, shall we say, a less than full picture of the war and its effects. "We aim to report hidden truths, to put a human face on events, and explore the real interests behind the 'permanent war'." DANNY RAMPLING TO LEAVE BBC RADIO 1 Danny Rampling’s a lovely south london guy who kicked off the whole smiley culture phenomenon with his SHOOOM CLUB (and quickly regretted it when Thatcher cracked down hard!) By kicking back on the whole Rave Culture aspect, and concentrating purely on the music (as if u could!), when the hitherto illegal rave scene finally started to get picked up by the overground media Danny was persuaded to do his Love Groove Dance Party which has now been going at BBC Radio 1 since 1994. But arguments with the management have seemingly led to a split. Danny has international djing demands to meet, and Radio 1 claim a harder dance show policy wouldn’t go amiss, away from Danny’s mix of soulful and vocal US and UK house. The BBC, however, have emphasised that this does not mean the end of Danny’s relationship with Radio One. 'There's no intention to stab Danny in the back and his shows haven't finished yet” said a spokesperson. “He's still going to be with us in Miami and everyone at Radio 1 loves him.' Let's see results! maya / washington UP - In Burma the rainbow is a dangerous spirit. “FOLLOW ME OR MAKE MY DAY!” The ground war in Afghanistan hotted up yesterday when the Allies revealed plans to airdrop a platoon of crack French intellectual warriors into the country to destroy the morale of Taleban zealots by proving the non-existence of God. Elements from the feared Jean-Paul Sartre Existentialist Brigade, or 'Black Berets', will be parachuted into the combat zones to spread doubt, despondency and existential anomie among the enemy. Hardened by numerous intellectual battles fought during their long occupation of Paris's Left Bank, their first action will be to establish a number of pavement cafes at strategic points near the front lines. There they will drink coffee, smoke Gitanes cigarettes, and talk animatedly about the absurd nature of life and man's lonely isolation in the universe. Supporting them will be a regiment of heartbreakingly beautiful girlfriends who will further spread dismay by sticking their tongues in the philosophers' ears every five minutes and looking remote and unattainable to everyone else. Their leader, Colonel Marc-Ange Belmondo, spoke yesterday of his confidence in the success of their mission. Sorbonne graduate Belmondo, a very intense and unshaven young man in a black pullover ‘uniform’ by FCUK, gesticulated wildly and said, "The Taleban are caught in a logical fallacy of the most ridiculously outdated and unfashionable kind. There is no God and I can prove it. Take your tongue out of my ear, Juliet, I am talking." Marc-Ange plans to deliver an impassioned thesis on man's nauseating freedom of action with special reference to the work of Foucault and the earlier films of Alfred Hitchcock. However, humanitarian agencies have been quick to condemn the operation as inhumane, pointing out that the effects of passive smoking from the Frenchmen’s' endless Gitanes could wreak a terrible toll on civilians areas so far untouched by the bombing. Speculation was mounting last night that Britain may also contribute to the effort by dropping Professor Stephen Hawking into Afghanistan to propagate his non-deistic theory of Creation. Indeed there has been some street demand in Cambridge for precisely this. Other tactics to demonstrate the non-existence of God will include the dropping of leaflets pointing out that Michael Jackson has a new album out and Oprah Winfrey has not died yet. This is only one of several psy-ops the Allies are mounting to undermine the unswerving religious fanaticism that fuels the Taleban's fighting spirit. Pentagon sources confirmed rumours yesterday that America has sent in a 200-foot-tall uranium tipped robot Jesus, designed to roam the Taleban zones glowing eerily, shooting flames from its fingers and declaring, 'I AM THE WAY, THE TRUTH AND THE LIFE, FOLLOW ME OR MAKE MY DAY!' Plans, however, to have the giant Christ kick the crap from a slightly effeminate and slightly shorter Mohammed in central Kabul had been discarded on Alistair Campbell’s advice, said the sources, as “probably insensitive to our Muslim allies. We’re on a crusade to stop stuff like that.” http://www.michaelkelly.fsnet.co.uk/exis.htm UP - It is lucky to see a rainbow, and to wish when it is first seen. COLOUR CODE: dlight states / fraser replies / dlight responds to fraser / f reacts to d >>>Hi Fraser, while I appreciate your impulse to be progressive and radical, what you're broadcasting is a disguised form of conservatism. Forget politics. By yelling about these guys you are making them powerful! >>they’re destroying the planet’s resources, killing hundreds of thousands annually and starving millions (so we westerners can live in relative comfort on the crumbs from their global table) and now they’re talking of eternal war against evil, and u say i’m making them powerful?! why, i never even met them! >but if we support the old system with our daily actions, then it's totally hypocritical to be ranting about the bad guys OUT THERE. It's so easy to blame other people, especially politicians. It's much more difficult to actually live by our ideals, to practice what we preach. certainly. but hey, i use too many plastic bags but i don’t trash wildernesses. >>>They are NOT powerful or important. You're falling for a big hoax perpetuated by the mass media. >>which baby legs EXACKLY didn’t get blown off today or yesterday or yesterday or... ? >>>We need to focus on our extended tribes, not the world political situation. >>izzit a choice as u put it? the extended tribe is/was a necessary stage in a species evolution spearheaded by Rave Culture, but it was/is always a practice for re-growing the human family. first zippy principle: harrmonised hemispheres are healthier, remember? OR: “you can’t have a perfect club in an imperfect society you have to change society” >>>I see nothing in your long email about what we're doing in OUR network to create a new culture. Being AGAINST something is not enough. Check out Cinnamon Twist's LP E-blips to see a much healthier balance between tribal empowerment and global politics in an email bulletin. I'll forward one to you in case you're not on the learning party email list. >>am an honourable fresher in the learning party :) agree that being against is not enuff. but is being ‘for’ something else enuff? why the choice? >The problem with this political action approach is that it’s a painfully slow process that encourages us to be angry, pessimistic and cynical which is naturally the emotional tone of your bulletin. goddess i hope that’s not true! i’m certainly failing if that’s the effect. the FACTS are bad, but the interpretation of what’s really going on behind overground developments is very positive. >>>I can hardly believe that you've strayed so far from your initial position. >>i just got to put this in here, dlight, i came across it while looking for a different old poem which contradicts your charge (have put it at the end of our exchange): if you think it's not so bad, or think i'm being utopian don't tell me, tell an ethiopian! >>>Pronoia* surely means that we can relax about the outside world and focus on strengthening OUR culture. >>i’m the Iraqi mother’s pronoia in action :) * the sneaking suspicion that others are conspiring behind your back to help you. and you them. >>>It is our lack of incubated full-blown culture that makes us look to the outside for excitement and direction.. >>oh no, no, no, no, no. dlight, it’s (mostly) american citizens’ inability (due to constant and planned brainwashing) to ‘look to the world around them’ that makes them see it as a different culture etc. i agree, though, that part of their answer is to tune out of the propaganda, maybe go off to the forest for an organic brainwash. >Right, the act of banding together to start living as we would like is inspiring, empowering and optimistic. We can change the future by example which is ultimately far more effective than protesting and complaining. My personal activities have been focused on communally buying large properties both in and out of the city where we can test out the kind of lifestyle and ideals that we have been attempting to persuade the larger culture to adopt. good luck. when ‘they’ come looking for me will you give me a place to hide? :) >>>Let me respectfully suggest that you: * Blow up your TV! >>but not my modem not my modem never! * Give away your radio. >>too harsh, too puritan :) *Don't buy (or read) the newspaper (Save a tree!) >>zippy principle: if you’re following the news too closely, quit for a while if you’re avoiding the news too consistently GET PLUGGED INTO WOT’S HAPPENING! in your name! with your tax dollars! if you give up newspapers for a lifetime you save a single tree. is that all you want to save?! >>>These are all one-way media and are the most powerful brainwashing tools ever invented. Their message is simply: WE ARE POWERFUL, WE ARE IN CONTROL, WE HAVE THE TRUTH. (But it's an illusion) >>total agreement. and the main thing is that they’re not all powerful, not even close, and a smart zippy can (fairly easily) learn how to glean the truth and reinterpret the shite. u know what i think? i think some (many) people have been so fooled by them THAT THEY’VE ACTUALLY BOUGHT THE IDEA THAT NOTHING IN LIFE EXCEPT CELEBRITY REALLY MAKES ANY SENSE, THERE’S NO HISTORICAL PLOT/ DEVELOPMENT, AND NOTHING CAN EVER REALLY CHANGE! AND THAT’S WHAT DRIVES PEOPLE LIKE YOURSELF, THROUGH DESPAIR (unconscious largely) TO SAY FUKKIT I’LL LOOK AFTER MYSELF AND MY LITTLE FAMILY THAT’S HARD ENUFF. u think so? and yet this (real) emotion of yours is very very close to the truth: see the last line of my poem below :) >>>Take a 3 month one-way media fast, and you'll see that your perception of the world changes as you stop projecting your personal fears and unresolved issues (which we all have) onto world politics. >>while that’s unarguably true, you seem to have the built-in assumption that it’s IMPOSSIBLE to see what’s happening planet-wise objectively. i don’t buy that for a single second (esp. with this internet freestate) indeed that’s what all the propaganda is designed to make you/me think (feel actually) we’re in the climax of human ‘history’ and what you’re talking about comes AFTER the victory. or actually, and this is our community’s agreement, they’re one and the same thing! > OK, I’ll back off of my previous criticism on the global politics front :) If you feel the best way to “save the planet” is by keeping tabs on the activities of George Bush and friends, that’s fine with me. If people are “edutained” by your emails, who am I to argue? By all means keep up with the exploits of the bad guys, so I can proceed with the culture-building side of things which resonates more powerfully with me. u miss that what i’m doing is culture-building. there are all these ‘tribes’ out there, isolated from each other and the rest of the planet and so easily picked off and controlled, and the UP attempts to help define a serious, sustained, enlightened and super critical cultural ‘take’ on what’s happening. some of the ideas and info, and much of the ‘esprit’ and approach, spreads out from each recipient, and so the global culture is slowly (imperceptibly?) affected. that would be my hope :) >>>Because you're spending too much time soaking up their message, you are unwittingly reinventing yourself in their image. >>i hope that’s not true, tho i confess i sometimes worry about it. but somebody just tried to hijack our 3rd millennium into one of Eternal War! and i judge they’ve got it wrong and can be beaten and our species can evolve to the next level beyond the present Dinosauric Age. but time’s short, and everyone is required. >>>Time to start believing in the power of our culture again. The world is ok. >>the world is NOT ok, it’s in a terminal state. and our culture is its only hope, i’ve never stopped believing that. we are the future, already here, BUT WITH NO GUARANTEE OF SURVIVAL. when they came for the afghanis i said nothing cos i’m not afghani. when they came for the Iraqis i did nothing cos i’m no Iraqi. when they dug up antartica, placed star wars on my moon and bombed paris i but then they came for me and my little family and there was nobody left to help us. >I’m sure our activities will support each other :) But I do strongly resent the implication that I’m “apathetic” just because I don’t want to hang on every move by the “stupid white men”. My friends and I are using every ounce of our energy to promote an incredible future, so please respect those of us who choose the path of “building up” rather than your path of “criticizing and tearing down”. zen is defined as the way of doubt. but i’m certainly not calling you ‘apathetic’ tho there are many who are. not so much ‘apathetic’ as ‘despairing’, convinced (by the propaganda) that nothing can change the present course of human culture. >>>It may sound like I'm ranting now but I'm dead serious. I'll be happy to backup my position if you like. >>am sending this off now for you to reply where you care. suggest you use a different colour and i’ll explain at the beginning. >>>Respectfully, Dlight / california >>TO WHICH I REPLIED WITH THIS RELEVANT QUOTE FROM CHOMSKY: “We're not analyzing the media on Mars or in the 18th century or something like that. We're dealing with real human beings now who are suffering and dying and being tortured and starving because of policies that we are involved in, we as citizens of democratic societies are directly involved in and are responsible for. And what the overground media are doing is ensuring that we do not act on our responsibilities, and that the interests of power are served, not the needs of the suffering people, and not even the needs of the American people who would be horrified if they realized the blood that's dripping from their hands because of the way they are allowing themselves to be deluded and manipulated by the system.” Noam Chomsky TO WHICH DAVID DLIGHT REPLIED: >With all due respect to Noam Chomsky, (who I used to be a big fan of) I stand by my position that the world is in much better shape than both the mass media, and the activists would have us believe. Politicians, the mass media and Noam Chomsky all gain power by spreading fear and greatly overstating the negative. u may not know this (head buried in mulch’n all that:) but the very first technique of the overground is to ignore the argument and go for the guy hisself. u just did that. address the argument please. STOP PRESS FROM DAVID: “Because we don't expect to overthrow government, abolish capitalism, make civilization vanish, turn everyone in the world into walking buddhas, or cure all social / economic ills, WE DON'T HAVE TO WAIT FOR ANYTHING! If ten people walk away from civilization and build a new sort of life for themselves, then those ten are already living in the next paradigm, from the first day. They don't need the support of an organization. They don't need to belong to a party or a movement. They don't need new laws to be passed. They don't need permits... For those ten, the revolution will already have succeeded." Daniel Quinn BEYOND CIVILIZATION: Humanity's Next Great Adventure who’s waiting? and i fear daniel quinn is suffering from the same narrow delusion as george bush. they both think they can live isolated from the world. they can’t. not any more. our argument is a hoary old one, dlight, but my side of the argument wins today because all these issues are coming to a single head whether you like it or not (which doesn’t mean that daniel quinn can’t LESSEN its daily effects, which can be of course wonderful) and here’s that poem i was looking for. it was written in 1992, so where have i changed? and remember to chekkout that last line :) THE WORLD AS HORROR HOLOGRAM VIEWED FROM A ZIPPY'S CELL Proud and paranoid superpowers stumbling as to war, Presidents' wives getting pally Popes and saintly bureaucrats fumbling in the dark Those with the strength look up from Desolation Alley Where the Holy Fools and HIV carriers have been banished from the park. Though skeptics may dismiss the possibility that a nation which spends $400 billion a year for military purposes can somehow convert swords into plowshares, nevertheless the very founding and history of America demonstrates its creative possibilities. America is a nation known for realizing impossible dreams. America is a nation which in its second century abolished slavery, which many at the time considered impossible. America is a nation where women won the right to vote, which many at the time considered impossible. America is a nation which institutionalized the civil rights movement, which many at the time considered impossible. If we have the courage to claim peace, with the passion, emotion and integrity with which we have claimed independence, freedom and, equality we can become that nation which makes non-violence an organizing principle in our society, and in doing so change the world. HR 2459 is a bill to create a Department of Peace. It envisions new structures to help create peace in our homes, families, schools, neighborhoods, cities, and in our nation. It aspires to create conditions for peace within and to create conditions for peace worldwide. It considers the conditions which cause people to become the terrorists of the future, issues of poverty, scarcity and exploitation. It is practical to make outer space safe from weapons, so that humanity can continue to pursue a destiny among the stars. HR 3616 seeks to ban weapons in space, to keep the stars a place of dreams, of new possibilities, of transcendence. We must meet each other worldwide about peace, now. We can achieve this practical vision of peace, if we are ready to work for it People worldwide need to gather in peace, now. People worldwide need to march and to pray for peace, now. People worldwide need to be connecting with each other on the web, for peace, now. We are in a new era of electronic democracy, where the world wide web, numerous web sites and bulletin boards enable new organizations, exercising freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, freedom of association, to spring into being instantly. Peacemaking can be deeply creative where war making is profoundly uncreative in its destruction. We need to communicate with each other the ways in which we work in our communities to make this a more peaceful world. thespiritoffreedom.com is such a web site. It is dedicated to becoming an electronic forum for peace, for sustainability, for renewal and for revitalization. It is a forum which strives for the restoration of a sense of community through the empowerment of self, through commitment of self to the lives of others, to the life of the community, to the life of the nation, to the life of the world. Man of the year? YOU’ve guessed it! Osama Bin Laden. (we’re trying to find out why as if we didn’t know) UP - In Ireland, anyone who found the place where the rainbow touches the ground would find a pot of gold at its foot - something I tried to do several times as a child! uk NOT ONLY DID AMERICA FIGHT SHOULDER TO SHOULDER WITH US IN THE WAR (not!) WE STILL OWE THEM A LOT - £243 million to be exact! Robert Skidelsky's life of J.M. Keynes has a brutal account of how America exploited Britain's wartime vulnerability. Though Keynes tried vainly to ensure 'we have enough assets to leave us capable of independent action', the US made him accept that the US Empire would supplant its British rival. In return for loans, Britain had to cut exports, limit gold and dollar reserves and repay debt from 1950 onwards. According to Ruth Kelly, the Treasury Minister, Britain still owes £243 million. Rather than relieve the debt of Third World peasants, Britain, she said, intended to meet the bill in full by 31 December 2006. Until her statement, Blair's sudden enthusiasm for a needless war against Iraq was a mystery; his failure to tell Bush that British troops can't be both peace-keepers and combatants in Afghanistan, a dereliction of duty; his inability to force a concession from Washington on any issue from Kyoto to steel tariffs, a national humiliation. Now what was baffling is clear. Debtors are in no position to demand concessions from creditors. According to the Treasury, Britain will be free to have an independent foreign policy on 1 January 2007. And that’s just Britain! The first wave in the Globalisation Tide! UP - A rainbow in the morning means further rain during the day. WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND Fraser, You've gotta admit, there's a lot of irony these days. Just think about this for a minute: Young Bush lied, cheated, bribed, and stole his way to the White House. This is the first time in our history that (even though widely reported) the citizens of this country stood by and watched the democratic process being dragged down about their heads and shoulders like freedom's version of the Twin Towers tragedy. For the first time in our history we don't have a President, no sireee, today we've got us a KING. But here's where the great irony comes in. The last time the good people of this land got fed up with an imbecilic King George was around the year 1776. That was when the REAL AMERICANS (but only about 20% of the population by the way) told the good king to fook off, and an entirely new nation was born. Unfortunately, that new nation never quite lived up to anyone's expectations. It had a few good moments, but never quite got it right. AND NOW, along comes another Moronic King George. If it’s true, that "what goes around comes around" maybe we're about to witness the birth of another new nation! We're dealing with real human beings now who are suffering and dying and being tortured and starving because of policies that we are involved in, we as citizens of democratic societies are directly involved in and are responsible for. And what the overground media are doing is ensuring that we do not act on our responsibilities, and that the interests of power are served, not the needs of the suffering people, and not even the needs of the American people who would be horrified if they realized the blood that's dripping from their hands because of the way they are allowing themselves to be deluded and manipulated by the system.” Noam Chomsky UP - THE CARLYLE CONNECTIONS (“when Carlyle finally hits the official media, george bush can start packing” fraser.) The steel tariff decision - denounced by Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill in candid private comments that quickly became public - looks more and more like one of the worst of the Bush presidency. From the European perspective, Washington looks unpredictable, erratic and impulsive - all the things that jar the allies' nerves. It’s easy to dismiss their mutterings as the nattering of nervous Nellies. But when the questioning comes from such friends as Germany and even Britain, plus chronic critics like the French, it may behoove Washington to take heed. The Europeans are not without power, as they demonstrated last week with their response to President Bush's surprise decision to impose 30% tariffs on steel imports from Europe and Asia. Americans living here or visiting Rome for the conference I attended were hard-pressed to explain the glaring contradiction between Bush's professed support for free trade and his action to protect declining steel makers in such political swing states as Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Many didn’t even try. EUROPEANS READY TO FIGHT BACK But the Europeans are furious, and not interested in excuses. And they’re ready to fight back - by hitting Bush’s electoral bases in Florida and Wisconsin - virtual ties in the last presidential election. The Wall Street Journal reported last week that the European Union is planning to target Florida orange juice and Wisconsin-made motorcycles, and also steel exports from Pennsylvania and West Virginia and textiles from the Republican political strongholds of North and South Carolina. By hitting electoral college battlegrounds and states with key Senate and House races in November, the Journal said, the EU will strike Bush "where it could hurt the worst at the ballot box." Another Wall Street Journal article last week reported that the Commerce Department has been inundated by requests from more than 1,000 U.S. manufacturers for tariff exemptions, claiming they cannot get the specialty steel they need from domestic steel makers. Government officials are struggling to determine the merits of each case - exactly the kind of heavy-handed bureaucratic interference with the marketplace that Republicans and conservatives are supposed to find abhorrent. The largest oil company contributor to George W. Bush’s presidential campaign, it has seen its investment pay off in the Bush administration’s resolute failure to sign the Kyoto Protocol, a global treaty committing countries to binding (though inadequate) reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, or take any serious steps to combat climate change. 1. IT MIGHT EXIST “We agree that the potential for climate change caused by increases in carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases may pose a legitimate long-term risk.” 2. BUT WE DON’T KNOW ENUFF YET “We do not now have a sufficient scientific understanding of climate change to make reasonable predictions and/or justify drastic measures. Some reports link climate change to extreme weather and harm to human health. Yet experts [he cites a Greenhouse Denialist] see no such pattern. ... Although the science of climate change is uncertain, there’s no doubt about the economic harm to society that would result from the Kyoto Protocol reducing fuel availability to consumers or other mandatory measures that would significantly increase the cost of energy.” 3. SO WE NEED MORE RESEARCH FIRST “This does not mean we favor doing nothing. We have redoubled our efforts in energy conservation at our own operations around the world” And while that’s going on, ExxonMobil continues its plunder of the world - consistent in its reckless efforts to evade the consequences of its actions. • The company’s Esso Australia unit was convicted in June of 11 charges linked to a 1998 explosion at a gas processing plant which killed two people. • Lead contractor in the World Bank-backed Chad-Cameroon pipeline, ExxonMobil threatens to replicate the devastating experience of Shell’s operations in the Niger Delta, where money flowed to a corrupt, brutal and repressive national government while local communities saw their livelihoods destroyed by pollution. • ExxonMobil continues to fight the $5 billion punitive damage verdict in the Valdez case. A federal appellate court, while agreeing that Exxon’s conduct in the Valdez case was reckless, ruled in November that precedent compelled it to reduce the punitive verdict, which was approximately 17 times the compensatory damages awarded to commercial fishers in the case. • ExxonMobil has continued to push for opening of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling, which would threaten the ecology of the largest designated wilderness area in the U.S. National Wildlife Refuge System. • A lawsuit filed by the International Labor Rights Fund in June alleges the company’s culpability in some of the mass atrocities committed by the Indonesian military in Aceh Province, in North Sumatra. The suit charges that Mobil Oil contracted with the Indonesian military to provide security for its Arun natural gas project, and controlled and directed the units assigned to it. • A New Orleans jury in May ordered ExxonMobil to pay a Louisiana judge and his family $1 billion for contaminating their land with radioactivity. Exxon had leased the land, and an Exxon contractor used it to clean radioactive Exxon pipes. The contractor claims they did not know the pipes contained radioactive material. Exxon says remediation costs for the land are minimal, and is appealing the verdict. Exxon’s lawyer Gregory Weiss told the National Law Journal. “The only thing that I can conclude is that they hit Exxon because it’s Big Oil.” UP -A rainbow generally means that the rainy period is about to end. AN AMERICAN DISCOVERS IRONY :) SAN FRANCISCO: Jay Fullmer, 38, yesterday became the first American to get to grips with the European concept of irony. "It was weird" Fullmer said. "I was in London and, like, talking to this guy and it was raining and he pulled a face and said, "great weather eh?" and I thought - "wait a minute, no way is it great weather". Fullmer then realised that the other man's 'mistake' was in fact deliberate. Fullmer, who is 39 next month and married with two children, aged 8 and 3, plans to use irony himself in future. "I'm like using it all the time, dude!" he said. "Last night I was grilling steaks, for example, and I burned them to shit and I said "hey, great weather!" UP - OUR PROBLEM? "Civil disobedience is not our problem. Our problem is civil obedience. Our problem is that numbers of people all over the world have obeyed the dictates of the leaders of their government and have gone to war, and millions have been killed because of this obedience. Our problem is that people are obedient all over the world in the face of poverty and starvation and stupidity, and war, and cruelty. Our problem is that people are obedient while the jails are full of petty thieves, and all the while the grand thieves are running the country. That's our problem." Howard Zinn. UP - Monterrey MARCH 21 Fidel Castro‘s speech at the International Conference on Financing for Development Excellencies: Not everyone here will share my thoughts. Still, I will respectfully say what I think. The existing world economic order constitutes a system of plundering and exploitation like no other in history Thus, people believe less and less in statements and promises. The prestige of the international financial institutions rates less than zero. The world economy is become a huge casino. Recent analyses indicate that for every dollar that goes into trade, over one hundred end up in speculative operations unconnected to the real economy. As a result of this economic order, over 75% of the world population lives in underdevelopment, and extreme poverty has already reached 1.2 billion people in the Third World. So, far from narrowing the gap is widening. The revenue of the richest nations that in 1960 was 37 times larger than that of the poorest is now 74 times larger. The situation has reached such extremes that the assets of the three wealthiest persons in the world amount to the GDP of the 48 poorest countries combined. The number of people actually starving was 826 million in the year 2001. There are at the moment 854 million illiterate adults while 325 million children do not attend school. There are 2 billion people who have no access to low cost medications and 2.4 billion lack the basic sanitation conditions. No less than 11 million children under the age of 5 perish every year from preventable causes while half a million go blind for lack of vitamin A. The life span of the population in the developed world is 30 years higher than that of people living in Sub-Saharan Africa. A true genocide! The poor countries should not be blamed for this tragedy. They neither conquered nor plundered entire continents for centuries; they did not establish colonialism, or re-established slavery; and, modern imperialism is not of their making. Actually, they have been its victims. Therefore, the main responsibility for financing their development lies with those states that, for obvious historical reasons, enjoy today the benefits of those atrocities. The rich world should condone their foreign debt and grant them fresh soft credits to finance their development. The traditional offers of assistance, always scant and often ridiculous, are either inadequate or unfulfilled. For a true and sustainable economic and social development to take place much more is required than is usually admitted. Measures as those suggested by the late James Tobin to curtail the irrepressible flow of currency speculation --albeit it was not his idea to foster developmentwould perhaps be the only ones capable of generating enough funds, which in the hands of the UN agencies and not of awful institutions like the IMF, could supply direct development assistance with a democratic participation of all countries and without the need to sacrifice the independence and sovereignty of the peoples. The Consensus draft, which the masters of the world are imposing on this conference, intends that we accept humiliating, conditioned and interfering alms. Everything created since Bretton Woods until today should be reconsidered. A farsighted vision was then missing, thus, the privileges and interests of the most powerful prevailed. In the face of the deep present crisis, a still worse future is offered where the economic, social and ecologic tragedy of an increasingly ungovernable world would never be resolved and where the number of the poor and the starving would grow higher, as if a large part of humanity were doomed. It is high time for statesmen and politicians to calmly reflect on this. The belief that a social and economic order that has proven to be unsustainable can be forcibly imposed is really senseless. As I have said before, the ever more sophisticated weapons piling up in the arsenals of the wealthiest and the mightiest can kill the illiterate, the ill, the poor and the hungry but they cannot kill ignorance, illnesses, poverty or hunger. It should definitely be said: "Farewell to arms!" Something must be done to save Humanity! A better world is possible! Thank you. UP WE ALL KNOW BY NOW HOW THE CIA CREATED SADDAM, BIN LADEN, NORIEGA’N ALL THE OTHERS. BUT WHATTABOUT THE ONES IT’S CREATING TODAY? TO HAUNT & DISTURB OUR FUTURE?!!! J'ACCUSE: BUSH'S DEATH SQUADS Wayne Madsen, former Intelligence Officer/ National Security Agency, Washington The Washington Post has just run the fifth segment in its series on what transpired within the Bush Cabinet in the aftermath of September 11. Of particular interest is what CIA Director George Tenet brought to the table at Camp David on September 15. According to the Bob Woodward and Dan Balz article, he produced a Top Secret "WORLDWIDE ATTACK MATRIX" that specified targets in 80 countries around the world, BUT HE ALSO SOUGHT UNPRECEDENTED AUTHORITY TO SIMPLY ASSASSINATE FOREIGN TERRORISTS DIRECTLY or though allied intelligence services. 1. Theys Eluay. The Indonesian army chief, General Endriartono Sutarto, recently confirmed in Jakarta that West Papuan independence leader Theys Eluay was assassinated by Indonesian Army units after he was kidnapped last November 11. The assassins were members of KOPASSUS, a special ops unit trained by U.S. Special Forces and CIA personnel, and was involved in massacres in East Timor during the Indonesian occupation of that country. Henry Kissinger serves as a Director Emeritus on Freeport‘s board of directors, and former Louisiana Senator J. Bennett Johnston, recently identified as a lobbyist for Enron, serves as a full member of the board. 2. Abdullah Syafii. Indonesian army troops assassinated the military commander of the Free Aceh Movement, Abdullah Syafii on January 22. The Free Aceh Movement, which demands independence for Aceh, a region in northwest Sumatra, is a member of the non-violent Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO), an international organization headquartered in the Netherlands. It has also been at loggerheads with ExxonMobil, which has extensive drilling and refining operations in the territory. Local activists claim that Aceh's Governor Abdullah Puteh, who they say is on the payroll of ExxonMobil, had written a letter to Syafii inviting him to attend peace talks. Syafii's lieutenants claim the letter contained a tiny microchip that permitted Indonesian KOPASSUS troops to locate and ambush him. The operation has all the earmarks of the CIA, which can rely on National Security Agency (NSA) satellites to track such microchip transponders. 3. Elie Hobeika. Elie Hobeika was the head of the Lebanese Forces militia, a right-wing Christian army that was allied with Israel during its Beirut occupation, and had irrefutable evidence that Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon had authorized the mass murder of Palestinian men, women, and children at the Sabra and Chatilla refugee camps. An official Israeli commission of inquiry found Sharon indirectly responsible for the massacres. Hobeika was going to testify against Sharon at an upcoming Belgian war crimes tribunal which has already indicted Sharon for the war crimes. He was silenced by a Mossad car bomb that exploded near his SUV near Beirut. The CIA, now more and more closely allied with Mossad, is said to have given its approval for the action. 4. Chief Bola Ige. Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Nigeria, he was assassinated 2 days before Xmas in the bedroom of his home by unknown gunmen. Ige was a leader of the Yorubas, a largely Christian ethnic group that has championed the cause of southern Nigerian Christian tribes like the Igbo, Ogoni, and Yoruba who maintain grievances against exploitative Western oil companies that have spoiled their lands with pollution and pocketed most of the oil revenues for themselves and corrupt Nigerian politicians. Ige had been presidential candidate of the pan-Yoruba Alliance for Democracy, losing to the current President Olusegum Obasanjo, a former general many Nigerians believe is in the hip pocket of western oil companies, including Chevron and ExxonMobil. Michael J. Boskin, Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers under President Bush I is a member of the Exxon Mobil board, while current National Security Adviser Condolleeza Rice served on the board of Chevron. Currently serving on Chevron's Board is Bush I trade representative Carla Hills and former Louisiana Senator Johnston, who also serves on the board of Freeport McMoran. In all likelihood all of these assassinations were known to the CIA and allowed to take place unhindered. The killings all directly benefited the interests of the US military-industrial complex that President Eisenhower so poignantly warned us about some 40 years ago. http://www.conspiracyplanet.com/channel.cfm?channelid=94&contentid=454 U U U U U U U U U U U U U U U U U U U U UP P P P P P P P P P P P P P P P P P P P P P P P P P the UP//:-) la - la - la - lap-toppling da system!
