BIOTECHNOLOGY AND THE FUTURE - talk by PATRICK FLANAGAN (USA) Patrick began his career in biophysics research early by inventing the Neurophone when he was 14, a device that allows people to hear through intrinsic methods of ultrasonic detection. Life magazine recognised him as one of the most important young scientists in America when he was 17. Avoiding the traditional academic path, Patrick worked with prominent scientists as mentors. At 18, he worked with 78 year old Dr. Henri Coanda at Huyck Research Laboratories. "Father of fluid dynamics" and inventor of the first jet airplane, Dr. Coanda also researched the water consumed by the Hunza people for the secret of their longevity and low incidence of disease. This research, handed over to Patrick on his retirement, allowed the final discovery of the negatively charged nano-colloids that make Hunza water unique. Patrick has made over 300 inventions in the fields of electronics, physics, chemistry and medicine.. He’s a futurist. SOME HISTORY THE ORIGINAL HUMAN BE-IN 1967 BRINGING THE TWO POLES TOGETHER “Michael Bowen and I had become concerned about the philosophical split that was developing in the youth movement, and realised the change in consciousness and culture we were experiencing and which had to be communicated throughout the world could be damaged: - The anti-war and the free speech student movement in Berkeley thought the Hippies were too disengaged and spaced out - and the leaders were afraid their influence might draw the young away from resisting the war. - The San Francisco Hippies thought the anti-war movement was doomed to endless confrontations with an establishment which would react with violence and fascism. We decided we had to bring the two poles together. We felt that the ideals of Peace, Love and Community could transform the world and end the war in Vietnam. We wanted to turn the world on, and we’d need to attract the spotlight from centre stage Vietnam / Washington to centre stage Haight-Ashbury, San Francisco. Michael Bowen grounded much of the organizing energy for the Be-In. He invited Tim Leary and the Beat poets to the Human Be-In, and arranged for it to be a worldwide media event. It was an overwhelming success. Over 20,000 people came to Golden Gate Park. The psychedelic bands played: Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service. Poets Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder, Michael McClure and Lawrence Ferlinghetti read, chanted and sang. Tim Leary told everyone to “Turn on, Tune in and Drop Out”. The Diggers gave out free food. The Hell's Angels guarded the generator cables that someone had cut. Owsley Stanley gave out the free acid. A parachutist dropped like an angel from the sky and the whole world watched on the evening news. There’s an aura of 21st century tribalism; a dash of Mad Max mixed with a Robert Bly retreat in the midst of a hippie love-in.” Newsweek ======================================================================= so i finished my first novel SHAZAM - about changing from the ordinary to the super. i took my first LSD and never looked back until 20 years later, alone with my 7 year old son in an new york east village apartment, with junkies on the stair at night and an unsellable novel and no money, when it occurred to me for the very first time in twenty years that maybe, just maybe, Life really is just a bowl of meaninglessness after all and nothing gets noticed or sorted out fairly ever, except by accident like us. before that, i'd travelled a lot of the world, seeking, really, a mature society somewhere that would take a hard look at western capitalism and say, well, we'll take this and we'll take that, but you can stick the rest. it didn't happen, i encountered a more real 'civilisation' in all the third world countries i lived in, but they all seemed doomed somehow to pass through this process, which is centred and driven from the west. finally i returned to the belly of the beast whence the dark energy was emanating, to do love-battle :). i was almost forty years old. i'd never run a business, i'd spent less than a month total working in any kind of office and less than a year working for any kind of employer. i'd traded, exported, sold occasional articles, dabbled in dope dealing when pressed, worked as an extra in movies and as a deck chair attendant on several beaches, but mostly my pattern had been to work freelance in market research in london (obscenely well paid in those days and probably now) saved up enough in three months to go off and live abroad for a year or more. and i'd written hundreds of poems, scores of short stories, and at least three novels, none of which has yet been published (they're not about car chases :) my last novel, new worlde trips, had been about the whole hippy era. scott meredith, norman mailer's agent, told me i would have to wait for people's taste to return to this great subject, which he thought would take several decades. he was right, it's started recently, but i couldn't believe it would take that long and i got stuck into saving the goddamn planet whether it was ready to be saved or not, or even knew it was in danger in the first place! “Such cybernetic celebrities as Timothy Leary, the Grateful Dead Lyricist John Perry Barlow and Ken Kesey have expressed support for the Clark gospel. Mr. Clark is lord of the new techno-shamanism.” New York Times i edited and published the encyclopaedia psychedelica international through the '80s, predicting and then beginning to document the new rise of mass consciousness-raising that, of course, actually kicked off with the arrival of rave culture. naturally, i both recognised it right away and also attracted its participants because of the work i was doing. truly, every second day or so i would receive a letter from some youngster oop north or wherever who'd say "you've changed my life. all this time i thought i was different from everybody else, and i thought the hippies were all over". a tear in your eye every second morning is not a bad life :) since rave culture has grown i've published various underground magazines, zippy times, evolution^, and my record label evolution records has released albums with terence mckenna, timothy leary, genesis p orridge and many others, i've performed on records myself with mixmaster morris and others, i produced the Shamanarchy In The UK album, a single i was creative director on with tim leary and the grid reached 98 in the Top 100, i signed terence mckenna to the shamens' no 1 hit Re-Evolution, and i've created and run massively successful and consciousness-raising clubs like Megatripolis and the legendary 24 hour Warp Experience. in 1995-96 i organised (if that's the right word) the Zippy Pronoia* Tour To US across america to spread the good true word about the new rave culture before the authorities could tar it with all their guilt-ridden medieval witchcraft spin and i ran a Megatripolis club in San Francisco, one to launch tim leary's last book, and i did the 'rave' at the Unity Festival in Arizona. * pronoia - the sneaking suspicion that others are conspiring behind your back to help you - and you them and now everybody is catching up, the dinosaurs who have always secretly run this world are being flushed out into the open where all can see how they are, and the internet has opened communication in ways the authorities can no longer control and i've published a weekly on-line magazine The UP! which is received by over 200,000 people around the owrld, and i sense, as i always have, that a truly monumental change has begun happening to our world. i hope (and i do believe also) that the NEW HUMAN BE-IN will kick off a whole new Movement that will finally change the world and just in the nick of time. around whom, i ask destiny, could everyone safely gather besides those who never sold out, like the original creators of the Human Be-In and those who have chosen daily to live their lives true and deep and honest ever since, and are ready to die, unknown, if so be the ways of the world, but who are also ready (even eager :) to serve when people are finally ready to realise they are NOT being served. ==================================================== “Crank up the music.
