It’s a very clear and simple concept. There have been quite a few earlier Media Revolutions, of course. The big ones, like the inventions of language, the printing press, radio, and television, have brought us to where we are today regarding the creation, processing, and transmission of information. As significant as these earlier revolutions may have been, they pale to significance beside what is already beginning to take place. I’m speaking, of course, about the significance of the change the Internet brings, with its promise of many-to-many information publishing. The Internet is much more than a revolutionary technology. It’s an evolutionary technology that, as a force of nature, cannot be stopped by the power-elite. It was we the people who birthed the Information Age by driving computer power down to the desktop level. We’ve built the Internet into the most powerful communications infrastructure the world has ever seen. On the sixth floor of its downtown HQ was a set, designed to trick analysts into believing business was booming. "It was an elaborate Hollywood production that we went through every year when the analysts were going to be there, to impress them, and to make our stock go up," reports former employee Carol Elkin, an energy analyst there for five years. Elkin said the phony trading room was staffed by her and other employees to resemble a real trading operation. "They would build out the sixth floor as what I called a Hollywood set. They would build a set with big, 36-inch flat panel screens and teleconference rooms." Elkin said that it was all an act, and that no trades were actually made there. The people on the phones were talking to each other. "They would ask us to go alternately, in hour shifts, down to the sixth floor, and sit and pretend that we lived and worked there." Elkin said that it fit the company's culture that ENRON couldn't just be a good company -- it had to appear at least, to be the best, even if the truth was all smoke and mirrors.
