I feel the Internet and the availability of global communications in general are probably some of the best consciousness-raising tools that we have available to us. The instantaneous and currently uncensored ability to write to anyone in the world who has access to a computer is only beginning to be utilized. I am intimately aware of the infrastructure that allows this technology (with which we are communicating right now) to exist. The computers and communications network (including satellites that transmit intercontinental telephony) represent only the very small tip of a very large pyramid that is built upon a base of coal mines, oil wells, refineries, etc. If "Wall Street" were to suddenly close down permanently, sooner or later the internet, the satellites, the phone system, etc. would all go dead and the Zippies would have no good way to communicate. In other words, your web site (and other "electronic" communication tools) are completely dependent on the "system" that many Zippies wish would collapse. Given this premise, do have any thoughts on what PLAN B is? In other words, how to carry on when the e-mail stops working? HOW LONG BEFORE AN IRAQ WAR WOULD BE ‘OVER’ afghanistan NO END, LET ALONE “VICTORY,” IN SIGHT Paul Rogers / remix The intense fighting near Gardez portends a deeper, lengthier war in Afghanistan than early claims of US ‘victory’ implied. If three putative ‘last stands’ have not eclipsed even Taliban resistance, where is the ‘war on terror’ going? Islamic news agencies claim (since American info must be treated as intrinsically mere propaganda at this point) that a relatively small number of Taliban militia held out against far greater US and Afghan forces backed by intense air power. I heard a British MP say on TV tonight that a hundred were killed on the American side (tho not necessarily all Americans). He also said that all the Apache helicopters were shot down. Nobody on the panel contradicted this information.) If any or most of the above is right, then the United States could be in the process of getting involved in a substantial guerrilla war in Afghanistan that may limit its ability to take military action in other countries, including Iraq. THE BACKGROUND TO OPERATION ANACONDA Before trying to make sense of the fighting near Gardez, there are several points to remember. In most of the fighting in Afghanistan over the past six months, there has been a consistent process of Taliban militia withdrawing, rather than engaging with anti-Taliban forces supported by heavy US air power. Indeed, the UPGRADEmag was one of the few Western media to report that the decision to abandon the cities and fight a guerilla war was announced by the Taliban leadership a WEEK before the so-called ‘collapse. Very few of the Taliban or al-Qaida leadership have been killed or taken into custody - indeed it is still unclear how many al-Qaida fighters have even been engaged in the conflict. Those in custody at Camp X-Ray appear to be low level people with very little information of real value. Furthermore, the fighting near Gardez was widely reported as being the Taliban’s last stand, but there have already been two earlier “last stands”, in Kandahar and at Tora Bora. In the first case, there was little fighting as Taliban militia withdrew, and at Tora Bora, several days of intense air bombardment did not prevent large numbers of militia withdrawing successfully across the mountains. Perhaps most significantly, reports from western journalists traveling in Southern Afghanistan indicate a degree of lawlessness and disorder, coupled with a rising anti-American mood in Pashtun areas, that suggests that support for the Taliban has not gone away but may only be dormant. The operation was intended to destroy and ‘identified’ ‘re-grouping’ of 600 fighters, mostly Arab and Chechen, in high mountain areas above the village of Shah-i-kot. Unlike Tora Bora, the plan was to use many hundreds of US regular army troops, coupled with US and other special forces to surround the militia, while a combination of heavy bombing and the use of Afghan forces would lead to their defeat. The operation began after several weeks of planning, and was expected to last 2 or 3 days. Heavy fighting on the 2nd and 3rd days left eight US soldiers dead, over 30 injured, and a number of allied Afghan fighters killed and injured (and that’s the American figures!) Though resistance was much heavier than expected, 200 enemy were reported to have been killed. By the 4th day, American-supplied info was suggesting up to 2,000 guerrillas in the area, in caves or in surrounding villages. They were, however, being bombed relentlessly and, according to a local Afghan commander, had become very weak and were low on ammunition. “They can’t escape. They’re surrounded. Slowly we’re pushing in.” On the 5th day, though, the US sent in substantial reinforcements including 200 more solders and 17 helicopters, having had “7 helicopters damaged” earlier in the fighting. (American-fed info again) It was also now reported that, though “hundreds” had supposedly been killed, local Afghans were joining the guerrillas! One US general estimate, obediently reported, estimated 600-700 guerrillas actively engaged in the conflict, with about half already killed. Oh yes, and the operation was expected to end shortly. Bad weather limited the fighting on the 5th, 6th and 7th days, but “definite expectations” were duly reported of total “victory” early in the 2nd week. Substantial additional Afghan forces were, nevertheless, moved towards the area from Kabul, while US sources now spoke of 500-600 guerrillas killed - as many as had been earlier estimated to be involved in the whole conflict! Now get this. On the 8th day, instead of the fighting escalating as reinforcements arrived, the US withdrew 400 of the 1,200 troops from the area! The fighting was largely over, it was announced and obediently reported, and would mopped up by local Afghan troops. Local Afghan commanders, on the other hand, described it as a pause in the fighting, prior to a possible final offensive within a few days. No further major offensive occurred during the whole of the second week, during which US and Afghan forces were supposedly taking control of the Shah-i-kot valley. The US view being projected was of a substantial victory, with most of the guerrillas killed, but local Afghan commanders were intimating that “substantial numbers” might have successfully moved out of the area. There were also reports that some of those captured during the fighting were actually local farmers. HOW MANY ‘LAST STANDS’ MAKE A VICTORY? In a very confused situation, some facts are clear. US forces met much greater opposition than had been expected. Since the “Evil” Taliban and al-Qaida had been pronounced to an enthusiastic home audience as having been comprehensively defeated, how come substantial guerrilla units had actually been able to re-group, and how come US forces had found it necessary to mount a major military operation in the middle of winter? There’s little evidence to indicate substantial guerrilla casualties, certainly not in anything like the hundreds. In an interview at the beginning of week 3, the commander of US ground forces in Afghanistan, General Hagenbeck, while sounding optimistic, clearly indicated that there would be further fighting involving US troops. Though many guerrillas and their leaders had been killed, according to him, and substantial quantities of equipment and munitions had been destroyed, forcing the guerrilla forces “to find new ways of supporting and equipping themselves”, nevertheless there would be further rounds of attacks on guerrilla units in different parts of southern Afghanistan, with intelligence-gathering planes focusing on two or three areas of potential activity. Perhaps most significant of all was that he also indicated some urgency because of a possible counter-attack. “We think that there will be some groups that try to target American and coalition forces, looking for soft targets... We’ve got to get to them before they get to us.” The implications of this are quite remarkable. After unreported billions spent, slowly mounting body bags and three ‘last stands’, “Evil” guerrilla forces opposed to the United States in Afghanistan are considered to be sufficiently active and well-organised, even in the middle of winter, to be able to pose a threat to heavily armed US forces supported by overwhelming air power!!! The United States, with 4,000 combat troops in Afghanistan and another 1500 British troops just arriving, appears to be in the process of getting sucked into a guerrilla war that may go on... endlessly. Bear in mind the trashing of previous social organisation in all parts of Afghanistan. But, most significantly of all, focus on the fact that local Afghans may have joined guerrilla forces, rather than fled from them. It could be that we are seeing the development of a longer-term conflict. ‘WAR ON TERROR’: SLOWING DOWN OR HOTTING UP? While part of the motivation for the US request to Britain to provide 1,700 troops from 45 Commando, trained in mountain war, may be to demonstrate that we’re all happy bunnies in the Anti-Evil Coalition, the real implication is that US forces have found it so difficult to fight the guerrilla forces at high altitude that they REQUIRE additional help. The lawyer for the bank said that Enron cheated millions of investors out of billions of dollars. Countless lives and retirements have been destroyed. “While lining their own pockets and setting themselves up financially for life, Enron insiders misled many investors who represent working men and women,” said an Amalgamated vice president. “It’s our intention to retrieve the ill-gotten gains of the Enron insiders and return it to the people who were ripped off.” No one got hit harder than Enron employees. Enron used stock rather than cash to match employee contributions to their 401(k) retirement fund. Last Sunday the US prepared for fresh strikes against new pockets of al-Qaida and Taliban fighters in Afghanistan. At almost exactly the same time, American intelligence revealed that they had uncovered an increase in money being transferred between groups of al-Qaida fighters.IS GOD WATCHING OVER AMERICA? This is the 14th handy thing American intelligence has discovered since 9-11. Rewind the past six months and it becomes ineluctable: never in the history of modern warfare has so much been found so opportunely. It started the day after the attacks, with the lucky find of a flight manual in Arabic and a copy of the Koran in a car hired by Mohammed Atta and handily abandoned at Boston airport. In the immediate shocked aftermath of the attacks, these findings were somehow reassuring: American intelligence was on the case, the perpetrators were no longer faceless. In less than a week came another lucky find, two blocks from the twin towers, in the shape of Atta's passport. We had all seen the blizzard of paper rain down from the towers, but the idea that Atta's passport had escaped from that inferno un-singed would have tested the credulity of the staunchest supporter of the FBI's crackdown on terrorism. In December, of course, the laughing, boasting video of Osama bin Laden was unearthed in a house in Jalalabad. The new year saw no let-up in this serendipitous trove. January turned up an email sent by "shoe bomber" Richard Reid from a Paris cyber café (and found on its hard disk) shortly before boarding the Paris-Miami flight in which he claimed responsibility in advance for downing the plane. (Luckily or carelessly, Reid had pocketed a business card from the cyber café!) And what sort of “training” were all these guys getting in those camps in the Afghan mountains?! And then, not a fortnight ago, it was revealed that Americans had found a whole shelf of field manuals on undertaking terrorist activity, to put beside the instruction manual on how to use light automatic weapons left in a training camp in January! Apart from the fact that the al-Qaida network seem to have a catastrophic way with lost property, isn't it strange that these most demonised and potent of terrorists seem unable to operate any weapons without a manual? This bunch sounds as if they wouldn't be able to programme the video.

Of course you could interpret these discoveries differently. You could detect in them the clear hand of American propaganda. All these “lucky finds”, nevertheless, can't obscure 4 things American intelligence agencies have notably failed to find. Rhodri Jeffreys-Jones's new book, Cloak and Dagger: A History of American Secret Intelligence (Yale), shows how, almost since their 19th-century inception, American intelligence bureaux have invented/ exaggerated a succession of menaces to defend their spiraling budgets while failing to tackle effectively other, more substantial threats. Second, despite an offered reward of $2.5m, the FBI still hasn't discovered those responsible for last year's anthrax attacks. Third, American intelligence, tragically, didn't find Daniel Pearl, the US journalist kidnapped and murdered in Pakistan. Fourth - and most spectacular - despite having highly sophisticated satellite tracking equipment, and offering a reward of $25m for information leading directly to his apprehension or conviction, they still haven't found Bin Laden. Is this one reason why the US is talking about an attack on Iraq a flexing of the military biceps to distract from flabby intelligence? Whatever the case, to find one training manual might be regarded as a stroke of luck. To find a shelf-full looks like desperation. The Guardian. BLAIR MUST CLIMB OUT OF PRESIDENT BUSH'S POCKET
Tony Blair's claim to a major international role rests, as he sees it, on Britain's unique position. Geography and history, combined with his own clear vision and political strength, make this country, he contends, the strongest link between Europe and the US. ECHOING US MANTRAS ON IRAQ WEAKENS BRITAIN'S INFLUENCE In the days and weeks after September 11, the claim deserved a certain credence. Mr Blair came out first with the strongest expression of solidarity, and the US leadership thought he was building a coalition. This was an exaggerated judgment. President Chirac got to the US before him, and all EU countries took the right side without needing his encouragement. But Blair was very active. The British military bonds with Washington gave him special clout. It is even said that his voice was important in counseling President Bush not to rush too fast into Afghanistan. Now the picture’s different. The intensifying debate about a different idea, an all-out US attack on Iraq, finds him in the opposite position. He's walking towards an abyss he doesn't appear to recognise. Instead of doubling Britain's influence, he may be halving it or even rendering it negative. He speaks for America in Europe, but is not heard. He speaks for Europe in America but does not count. The famous bridge is evidently failing to deliver Europe to America, or America to Europe. Blair came away from Barcelona without securing wider support for military action, for which he ‘s been trying to get the world prepared. Disinterested alarm is widespread: alarm at US analysis of the threat and the response, anxiety about the consequences of any reckless US onslaught - and some of those Pentagon boys sure do sound reckless. Most EU leaders now watch Blair with incredulity. They see him climbing every day into Bush's pocket. He will deny that this is what he's doing. But it's the common perception of his peer-group. Is it his vanity, they ask? A desire to be at the centre of the action? An unquenchable passion to be close to Big Power? The pattern began last year when, on returning from Camp David, the PM sent his then private secretary, John Sawers, to convene a meeting of the EU ambassadors in London to tell them this man was going to be a great president. They found it as hard to credit the message as to purge their annoyance at being required to hear it. Since then, Blair has slipped from being the half-envied special connector with Washington, able to get access on behalf of Europe as well as Britain, to the apparent status of a minor cog in the American machine. This might, at least, be expected to keep him in with Washington. And having just committed 1,700 marines to take the heat off US special forces in Afghanistan, Britain is a continuing object of gratitude there. Tony Blair is a name that means something in bits of middle America. But another strand of opinion in Bush's Washington has little time for him. Not only was he Clinton's socialistic third way friend. More important, he's failing to deliver the Europeans for the next stage of the anti-terror war. He supplies no added diplomatic value, because he does not speak for Europe. Vice-President Cheney's visit to the Middle East, designed partly to build support for the next stage, has been a failure, which will oblige the US to think again about any anti-Iraq coalition. The continuing carnage in Israel-Palestine makes it harder still to envisage simultaneous operations against Baghdad. But, in truth, nothing is clear. The Pentagon hawks remain in full flight, and have supporters across the spectrum. And domestic politics could soon find its way into the calculations. A rightwing ideologue who has raised a protectionist fence round his steel industry for the sake of saving half a dozen congressional seats might not think it too foolish to start bombing Baghdad a couple of weeks before November elections that might otherwise go catastrophically against him. Blair too faces unfamiliar political pressures. The cabinet is restive about an attack on Iraq, with or without more British troops. The parliamentary party has raised 130 signatures expressing opposition. This week's Guardian poll showed a majority against military action in the foreseeable future. For Mr Blair, in such circumstances, to do no more than soothingly echo Bush's mantras about Saddam's weapons of mass destruction would weaken his position not strengthen it, in Britain, in Europe and in Washington. His only hope of raising British influence is to speak from the centre of gravity of the EU position, which I take to mean delivering roughly this message: "Yes, Mr. President, we agree Saddam is a political criminal, and we think the world would be a far safer place if Saddam were eliminated. Spoken at first in private, this would be a message that had resonance for two continents. The current bloodshed in Palestine was initiated when the “liberal” Israeli Prime Minister supplied an armed escort for his supposed political archenemy, the “hardliner” Ariel Sharon, to go into the Dome of the Rock and commit indignities which ignited the latest Palestinian uprising, which in turn resulted in Sharon's election as current Prime Minister. You can see that the thrust is to keep escalating it until they have a pretext to destroy the Dome of the Rock altogether, and ride out the backlash of world opinion long enough to then be able to begin construction of the Third Temple of Solomon. I say unto thee that this Temple, should it ever be built, is the crux of the master plan of the Cryptocrats, Jewish and Goyish alike, to establish the final and ultimate world slave-state of mind control and pseudo-religious totalitarianism. Harold Tom Nesvik, a member of the Norwegian Parliament from the Right-wing Party of Progress, has nominated U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair and U.S. President George W. Bush for the Nobel Peace Prize for "decisive action against terrorism, something I believe in the future will be the greatest threat to peace." According to the provisions of Nobel, the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize "shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses." Tony Blair has ordered more military actions than any U.K. leader since World War II, with at least one military action every year since 1998. George W. Bush has urged budgets massively increasing the size and funding of the U.S. standing military, continued and deepened U.S. military aid for the on-going civil war in Colombia and Israeli military occupation of Palestine, and initiated a war not only against Afghanistan, but an undefined, open-ended "War on Terrorism" which administration officials daily threaten to expand to other nations such Iran, North Korea, and Iraq. Vice President Dick Cheney told the Washington Post that the campaign of warfare the President has launched "may never end. At least, not in our lifetimes."
