ISRAELI RAVERS LEAD THE WAY IN
RAVE CULTURE’S
FINAL COMING OF AGE

israel
RAVE AGAINST THE GRAVE
4,000+ people turned out for Thursday's “RAVE AGAINST THE OCCUPATION” in the plaza at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.

Well, they pulled it off and Parallel YOUniversity salutes the brave, shamanically inspired, idealistic andtruly political” Israeli ravers who organised it (politics=social relations).  It has taken its time, but Rave Culture is now, finally, in the planet’s Hour of Crisis, coming of age!
FIRST -  the advance statement of their aims and motives, and
SECOND -  a first-hand description of the event itself.

RAVE AGAINST THE OCCUPATION
A new generation has grown, in a country united by old-fashioned ideals mixed with panic.  Uninvolved in “regular politics” and seemingly preoccupied only with parties and individual goals, it is, in effect, showing a clear contempt towards those ideals that have always led to constant violence  the familiar violence that presides everywhere in Israeli life  from politics and on to the streets.
Hundreds of thousands of young people in this country who aspire to one single thing have been without a clear voice until this day.  Its essence is simple
Normality.
Indeed, our generation hasn't been visible in left wing demonstrations.  It’s not eager to demonstrate, but instead yearns to live.  A silent cry for normality is expressed by many young people on the dance floors each weekend  stubbornly cherishing the belief that leading their lives just like any of the world’s other young people is their right.  That, in a country that impossibly mixes western democracy with the oppression of its minorities, and a brutal occupation of the neighbouring nation.
We’re told it’s either us or them, that this is a war in which we must prevail, and they order us to toe the line, succumb to panic and agree to murder.  That’s why we as civilians are proud to refuse an order.

We refuse to believe that the continuous oppression of the Israeli arabs contributes to our culture and existence here.
We do not understand why a handful of extremist settlers should dictate our lives.
We say “Arik, its either us or you” to the prime minister who tells us it’s either us or them.
We will not stand silent while you lead us to another stupid and cruel war that will result in the exact same state of constant violence.
WE PARTICIPATE IN THIS RAVE, not for the sake of enjoying music and dancing, but to vote with our feet and bodies that we can no longer bear the distortion of basic human values
We say that this war is not ours.
We state that we must do now what should have been done ages ago: GET THE HELL OUT OF THE OCCUPIED TERRITORIES.
We would probably not have carried out this rave if the situation had not been so truly alarming.  But in these days, when the stench of war is creeping from all sides, smothering us and devouring our neighbours, we are left with no choice but to make use of our natural and authentic tool of protest: RAVE AGAINST THE OCCUPATION.

FIRST HAND REPORT ON THE RAVE AGAINST THE GRAVE
Under the banner of, "Leave the Territories or Don't Leave the House," some of Israel's leading DJs, including Nabil; Yaron Sobol; Avner Malkha; Yaheli; Ori Likhtig; Yoav B and others spun their disks for the revelers, who danced the evening away as images from Israel's latest military operation in the territories, as well as from the 1967 Six Day War, were beamed onto a giant video screen.
The rave was not sponsored by any official political movement (apart from the
Peace Coalition, an umbrella organisation of several leftist groups, which helped with publicity for the event).  It was a spontaneous initiative undertaken by young people in their twenties, who are sick and tired of staid demonstrations staged by the left at Rabin square.
They raised about $10,000 to organise a different sort of protest.  This spontaneous, informal organisation has been directed by two unofficial leaders: the artist Ro'e Arad (remembered mostly for his appearance in the
Eurovision song contest with Syrian flags) is "responsible for personnel," and Shai Rapaport, director of a small high-tech firm in Kfar Sava, has become spokesperson.  He had this to say:
“They say we're freaks, they say we’re left-wingers, but thousands of people came here tonight to prove that we’re one of the last sane voices in the country."
Former Meretz leader, Shulamit Aloni, was also in attendance, as were other
prominent left-wing leaders, who for the most part just watched from the sidelines.

STILL THINK IT’S ALL OVER?   >> STILL THINK WHAT’S ALL OVER?!

“It's an ignominious ending to the triumphalism of the fall of Kabul just over six months ago.”

THIS FUTILE AFGHAN TURKEY SHOOT ISN’T EVEN KILLING TURKEYS!
WESTERN INTERVENTION HAS DONE LITTLE FOR THE AFGHANS AND EVEN LESS TO BEAT TERRORISM

There was almost relief in Brigadier Roger Lane's voice on Friday morning as he told the Today programme that they'd finally found and killed some AQT - al-Qaida/ Taliban - in the remote mountain valleys of eastern Afghanistan. They had engaged their enemy, hitherto as elusive as the snow leopard, and around 1,000 British soldiers were being flown in for the battle. Twenty-four hours later, Operation Condor, as it was named, looked about as farcical as every other operation in Afghanistan has done in the past six months.

You can take your pick from at least three explanations for
Operation Condor.  Option one is the claim of locals that far from being AQT, these were tribesmen in a shoot-out over some woodland.  Option two came from the Pakistan-based Afghan press agency which reported that these were tribesmen celebrating a wedding by shooting AK-47s into the air.  Option three was the Ministry of Defence's modified version by Saturday night that a) they were definitely AQT, but b) the marines had not yet made contact with them.

The problem with option three is how the
MoD in London can be so sure they are AQT when everyone else is having such difficulties identifying them. You have to sympathise with the marine quoted as saying: "It's impossible. They all look the same and they all carry guns."  Anthony Loyd, the Times correspondent, concluded recently that if you carry a weapon in the wrong part of Afghanistan and point it at one of the coalition special forces, you will inevitably die quickly and once you've been shot, you are AQT by definition.  Given that half the male Afghan population is armed, and used to using weapons liberally, there is ample scope for shooting shepherds.

Nor do either of the other options seem particularly plausible.  They both cropped up several weeks ago when US forces responded to shots by bombing and killing at least 10 Afghans.  Either Afghans have a tendency to fight over woodland or the US is not going to win many friends if its contribution to village nuptials is bombing raids.  It's no good instructing your Chinook pilots to wave at everyone they see because friendly relations are crucial, if you then bomb the groom.

The only sensible conclusion is that we know as much about
Operation Condor as we do about its predecessors - Anaconda, Ptarmigan, Snipe - and before that, Tora Bora: very, very little.  Follow the reports for the past six months and there is a ludicrous pattern of claims of victory, then a few discordant details trickle out and, finally, an admission of failure.  So, now we know that Tora Bora was regarded as one of the "gravest errors of the war": the US depended too heavily on unreliable Afghan fighters.  Osama bin Laden and many AQT fighters managed to escape.

We were told that Snipe had inflicted a "
significant blow" on the AQT by blowing up an arms dump, but immediately a stubbornly off-message Afghan commander popped up to say, rubbish, that was his dump left over from the fight against the Soviets.  We were initiated into a new form of warfare - don't measure success by body bags.  This is a very interesting form of fighting: first the US didn't want to get any of its men killed, then the AQT sensibly followed suit and the result is death-free war, a whole new concept of "pacifist war".

Even the marines know this is very silly.  Afghanistan is in danger of  becoming
the most embarrassing chapter in the recent history of British military engagements.  A peevishness has crept into the briefings.  Brigadier Lane complains that the AQT are "not showing a predisposition to reorganise and regroup to mount offensive operations against us".  They just won't come out to play.  Well, would you if the place was crawling with some of the most sophisticated weaponry in the world?  Far better to lie low and look after your goats, or visit some relatives over the border in Miram Shah in Pakistan's Waziristan, and brush up your Koranic chanting.

Any
AQT strategist can rely on the fact that their commitment and patience will comfortably outstrip that of the western soldiers currently trudging up and down the mountains of eastern Afghanistan.  Al-Qaida, like any terrorist organisation, doesn't need a base in Afghanistan to launch its attacks, while the Taliban can sit tight, quietly recruiting and regrouping, before re-emerging in Afghan politics.

It's an ignominious ending to the triumphalism of the fall of Kabul just over six months ago.  Here we are discussing a bad tummy bug, military latrines and whether our boys are using disposable cutlery.  Then, we were celebrating music on the streets and women news presenters back on the TV.

Afghanistan offered the perfect solution to September 11 - a massive expiation of US anger and, more subtly, guilt.  Dropping all those bombs felt doubly good: it was retaliation for a terrible crime, but also getting rid of an evil regime.  The emotional rush was everything; whether the latter actually worked has fallen off most people's radar screen.  They're not interested.
The selective memory means that what is remembered is that a few women in Kabul threw off their burkas in November, not that many more women in northern Afghanistan have been raped since then in a wave of ethnic revenge against the Pashtun.

Nor is anyone much interested that since the fall of the
Taliban, the old lawlessness of highway looting and illegal road tolls has re-emerged.  Or that in the past few months there have been at least two major conflicts between warlords  in Mazar-i-Sharif and in Gardez - as an uneasy truce awaits the results of next month's loya jirga.

Nor, curiously, has there been much said on the spectacular failure to halt the poppy crop.  The
Taliban virtually wiped out the trade (which supplied about 75% of the world's opium) but Afghan farmers are a canny bunch and no sooner was Mullah Omar on the run than they started planting on the assumption that no new government would have the authority or will to stop them.  They've been proved right.  Despite huge EU grants, Hamid Karzai's government has backed off, well aware that its position is too fragile to take on such an unpopular battle.

By the time of the first anniversary of the fall of Kabul it will no longer be possible to ignore the accumulation of these awkward details, and
we will be embarrassed to be reminded of our naive triumphalism.  The war was a crude and clumsy intervention which did little for the wretched Afghans, and even less for the struggle against terrorism.

In December, Downing Street put out a memo castigating the pundits who had got it
"wrong".  The war had made the world "safer for you and your family" it declared.  Try telling that to Mrs Pearl, or the families of the French engineers blown up in Karachi last week.  Try telling that to Americans who have been warned that there is a danger of a terrorist attack on a nuclear installation on July 4.

HOW TO TELL IF A DOGMA IS FRIENDLY
by Swami Beyondananda’s "Serious Humor for Serious Times"
(this one’s for penny :)

In the wake of that recent vicious dogma bite that led to an unfortunate
fatal karma crash, people are asking all kinds of questions:
Why do we let killer dogmas run free?
How do we deal with rabid dogmas?
Can formerly vicious dogmas be trained to sit, stay - and most importantly, to heal?

In other words, can you teach an old dogma new tricks?

Yes, it's a dogma-eat-dogma world out there, filled with pit bulls whose
bull pits them against other dogmas.  And, while we might be tempted to raise a stick to these bad dogmas, any dogma-trainer will tell you that you
cannot train a dogma to be loving and obedient by beating it.  To win a
dogma's heart, offer it a treat.  Say, "Good dogma. Sit. Roll over ... heal."

Now of course it's sad but true that when a dogma is foaming at the mouth
and is clearly rabid, it must be put down before it infects other innocent
creatures.  Even the most sentimental dogma-lover understands this.  So to
help us all, I have divided dogmas into two categories: Angry, unfriendly FundaMENTALIST dogmas, and the happier, more friendly FUNdamentalist ones.

FundaMENTAList          FUNdamentalist
Accent on the mental.   Accent on the fun.
Heaven is above us.     Heaven is where you make it.
Ours is the One Way.    One Way? - do not enter!
Laughter is frowned upon.  Frowning is laughed upon.
Vow of chastity.                Vow of levity.
An eye for an eye.              Live and let live.
You stone people.               People get stoned on their own.

Now the good news is, even the baddest dogma can change simply by changing their emPHAsis to another sylLABle.  And to help teach these dogmas to heal, I am launching a Blisskrieg to warm the heart of even the most fearful and angry dogma.  And we begin by kindling the spark of peace in our hearts and turning it into a bright flame.  Then we share this spark of peace to light everyone and everything we come in contact with.  It's a fight to the life!  We will light them on the land, we will light them on the sea, we will light them in the air!  We will even shine the light of love and laughter into their caves!

And maybe, with enough light, enough of us will get so frustrated with the stupidity of dogma-fighting, we'll just surrender and say, "Ah, peace on it!"   And, with a little peace here and a little peace there, who knows?  We may end up with one Big Peace everywhere, and both Nonjudgment Day and Disarmaggedon will come to pass.

That’s all.  Innit?

A GOOD LAFF?
According to behavioural biologist Silvia Cardoso, laughing can make us healthier.
It reduces muscle tension, and may boost the immune system and ease stress.
Cardoso also believes that laughter has a key social role, and is concerned that today's children may develop social problems because their play time is so isolated that they stare at computer screens, rather than laughing with each other.
"I think parents need to be very careful to ensure that their children play in
groups, with both peers and adults, and laugh more"
she says.

STRIFE, DISSENT BESET HILL'S 9-11 PANEL
BIPARTISAN GROUP DISAGREES ON MISSION

its ultimate goal.

CHENEY MOVES TO BLOCK 9-11 PROBE
WASHINGTON, May 19 -- Vice President Dick Cheney said today that he would advise President Bush not to turn over to Congress the August intelligence briefing that warned that terrorists were interested in hijacking airplanes.  He also insisted that the investigation into Sept. 11 should be handled by the Congressional intelligence committees, not an independent commission.
http://www.truthout.org/docs_02/05.21A.Cheney.Block.911.htm

"We know several warnings were given prior to the events of 9-11.   People were calling the CIA and the FBI, and giving information that was critical.  There was adequate warning.
“But, instead of requesting that Congress investigate what went wrong and why, we had President Bush place a phone call to Majority Leader Senator Tom Daschle, asking him
not to investigate.
“My question is,
what do they have to hide?
“The fact is that the father sits on the board of the
Carlyle Group, which is one of the highest-level defense contractors in the country.  And so we get this presidency of questionable legitimacy requesting a nearly unprecedented amount of money to go into a defense budget for defense spending that will directly benefit his father!”

ENRON PIPELINE LEAVES SCAR ON SOUTH AMERICA ENRON'S END RUN
Yet another victim of Enron: the Chiquitano Dry Tropical Forest, one of the two most valuable forests in Latin America and one of the 200 most endangered eco-regions in the world, according to the World Bank and the World Wildlife Fund, respectively.
The forest was the largest remaining undeveloped land of its kind in South America - until Enron built a 400-mile natural gas pipeline directly through it.  But, even more horrifying, the project was given the go-ahead and $200 million by Overseas Private Investment Corp (OPIC)., a U.S. agency charged with protecting sensitive forest areas!  Why?
Well,
Enron needed OPIC's backing because no commercial bank would finance the project, while OPIC needed Enron because of a congressional battle to eliminate the agency.
Enron successfully lobbied against the elimination, and OPIC backed the pipeline project even though one of its environmental reviewers is reported to have exclaimed that there was "no way in hell" it should be funded.

WIRING BRAZIL
In an attempt to close the gap between the wired and the unwired, Brazil plans to install computer kiosks in all the country’s 5,366 post offices, where people will be able to log on.
The first 10 minutes will be free, with a low fee after that.
"Of course we intend to charge a very low price, at least lower than
cybercafes,"
said Fausto Weiler, who works for the Brazilian post office.  "Our goal is to open this new world for those who can't afford to buy a computer, even in the countryside."
Once an easy Web link is established, the plan is to launch another project,
called
Permanent Electronic Address (PEA), which will supply every Brazilian with a free, private e-mail account.
At least 1.2 million people are expected to use the post office terminals
during the first year of operation, increasing to 4.2 million by 2004.
"Besides the social aspect of introducing these people to the digital age, we
could also create user communities, exchanging experiences among companies, government and citizens,"
said PEA director Marcelo Matos.

EVEN THE US GENERALS SMELL BUSH’S BLOOD
AND BAIL OUT PUBLICLY FROM HIS ‘MAD WAR ON IRAQ’

FBI AGENT ACCUSES AGENCY OF “SABOTAGE”
TO:             FBI DIRECTOR ROBERT MUELLER
FROM:   FBI AGENT COLEEN ROWLEY
MAY 1, 2001
“I have deep concerns that a delicate and subtle shading/ skewing of facts by you and others at the highest levels of FBI management has occurred and is occurring.
“I feel certain facts have been
omitted, downplayed, glossed over, and/or mis-characterised in an effort to avoid or minimise personal and/or institutional embarrassment on the part of the FBI and/or perhaps even for improper political reasons.
“It is obvious that the agents in Minneapolis did fully appreciate the terrorist risk/ danger posed by Zakarias Moussaoui
[a French Moroccan arrested on August 15 after instructors at a flight school became suspicious and now facing trial for 9-11 involvement) and his possible co-conspirators even prior to Sept 11.... So I think it’s very hard for the FBI to offer the new “20-20 hindsight” justification for its failure to act!
“The
FBI supervisory special agent (SSA) most involved in the Moussaoui matter seemed to have been consistently, almost deliberately thwarting the Minneapolis agents’ efforts...
“The fact is that key FBI/HQ personnel continued to,
almost inexplicably, throw up roadblocks and undermine Minneapolis’ by now desperate efforts to obtain a search warrant, long after the French intelligence service provided its information.
“Although I agree that it’s very doubtful that the full scope of the tragedy could have been prevented, it’s at least possible we could have gotten lucky and uncovered one or two more of the terrorists in flight training prior to September 11.
“I think your statements demonstrate a rush to judgment to protect the
FBI at all costs.”
Respected FBI agent Coleen Rowley has appealed for protection from disciplinary action under a federal whistleblower law, and is likely to become a key witness in the unfolding inquiry into America’s greatest intelligence failure since pearl harbour.

GETTING HIS PRIORITIES STRAIGHT
AN OPEN LETTER TO JOHN ASHCROFT, US ATTORNEY GENERAL
read by Claire Braz-Valentine at this year's In Celebration of the Muse, Cabrillo College.  She’s of 60+ years, conservatively dressed and obviously quite talented.

On January 28, 2002, Attorney General John Ashcroft announced that he’d spent $8,000 of taxpayer's money for drapes to cover up the exposed breast of The Spirit of Justice, an 18 ft aluminum statue of a woman that stands in the Department of Justice's Hall of Justice.
John, John, John, you've got your priorities all wrong. While men fly airplanes into skyscrapers, dive bomb the pentagon, while they stick explosives into their shoes, and then book a seat right next to us, while they hide knives in their luggage, steal kids on school buses, take little girls from their beds at night, drive trucks into our state capital buildings, while our president calls dangerous men all over the world evildoers and devils, while we live in the threat of biological warfare, nuclear destruction, annihilation, you are out buying yardage to save Americans from the appalling alarming, abominable aluminum alloy of evil, that terrible ten foot tin tittie.  You might not be able to find
Bin Laden, but you sure as hell found the hooter in the hall of justice.
It's not that we aren't grateful.  But while we were begging the women of
Afghanistan to not cover up their faces, you are begging your staff members to just cover up that nipple, to save the American people from that monstrous metal mammary.  How can we ever thank you?
So, in your office every morning, in your secret prayer meeting, while an American woman is sexually assaulted every 6 seconds, while anthrax floats around the post office and settles in the chest of senior citizens, you've got another chest on your mind.  While American sons arrive home in body bags and heat seeking missiles fly around a foreign country looking for any warm body, you think of another body.  And you pray for the biggest bra in the world.  John, you see that breast on the Spirit of Justice in the spirit of your own inhibited sexuality.
And when we women see our grandmothers, our mothers, our daughters, our granddaughters, our sisters, ourselves, when we women see that statue, the
Spirit of Justice, we see the spirit of strength, the spirit of survival.
Every day we view innocent bodies dragged out of rubble, and women and children laid out like thin limp dolls and baptized into death as collateral damage, and we see the hollow-eyed Afghani mother whose milk has dried up underneath her burka in famine, in shame, and her children are dead at her breast. While you look at that breast, John, that jug on the Spirit of Justice, and deal with your thoughts of lust and sex and nakedness, we see it as a testimony to motherhood.  You see it as a tit.

It's not the money it cost.  It's the message you send.  We've got the right to live in freedom.  We've got the right to cheat Americans out of millions of dollars and then just not want to tell Congress about it.  We've got the right to drop bombs, night and day, on a small country that has no army, no navy, no military at all, because we've got the right to bear arms.  But we just better not even think about the right to bare breasts.
So now John, you can be photographed while you stand there and talk about guns and bombs and poisons without that breast appearing over your right shoulder, without that bodacious bosom bothering you and we just wanted to tell you, in the spirit of justice, in the spirit of truth, John, there is still one very big boob left standing there in that picture.

//YOU FEEDBACK:  ARE PSYCHEDELICS THE ANSWER?
I was interested to read Charles Hayes’ opinion that Ecstasy may be an effective drug for the evolution of human consciousness.  He said "On ecstasy lies are inefficient"
That may be so. but more lies are told on ecstasy than on any other drug.  For years i had a close bonds with people that i went to clubs with, i barely knew them and i loved them and i felt a bond, a closeness, we shared a freedom, we knew the score!!!  It was not for some time that i broke through the ecstasy haze, maybe i met them mid week only to find their conversations starting with "I'm not racist but......"
Ecstasy does not challenge the ego, ecstasy does not evolve the soul.  I say yes to ecstasy as a bonding agent, i say yes to ecstasy as a means to dissolve hatred, to overcome trauma, but let us be clear that
it does not open the mind.  it does something else very important, it opens the heart and that is valid, but we cannot and should not herald ecstasy as the answer to the spiritual void that is our apathy.
Ecstasy is a pleasure drug that does not elevate, it motivates us towards love and freedom but it does not fill us with the movement towards these goals, it only motivates us to move towards pleasure.  Ecstasy is a beautifully selfish drug.  It does what it does and that is wonderful, but it is not the answer to our prayers.

Hi Fraser,
firstly, congratulations on a fantastic e-magazine which I read religiously every week since a good friend was nice enough to add me to your mailing list :)
Have you seen the new early morning show on
Channel 4 replacing 'The Big Breakfast' called 'RI:SE' ? (please tell me you have!:)
If not, see if you can get hold of the broadcast that went out on the 22nd May.  It’s a live show hosted by very relaxed young individuals who like to tackle controversial subjects.... The particular broadcast in question included a survey that ran in conjunction with the government to test how wide spread drug use was!!
Their findings were extremely interesting.....
100% of the money they vapour tested, showed positive for drugs.  69% of the money tested positive for MDMA, 80% proved positive for Cocaine and a staggering 36% for Heroin.  They even tested Euros which have been in circulation for only a year and a half, and the results were just as surprising.  (I’d quote more facts and figures but my memory isn't what it used to be!)
Anyway, a government representative then came on air and said,
'this experiment is not an accurate way to determine how wide spread drug use is.'  HOW RIDICULOUS IS THAT PLEASE?! An experiment held with the government and then AFTER they air the findings, they say it isn't accurate!!  They aren't the sharpest tools in the box and obviously have no idea about what they’re doing!!  The sooner they wake up and face reality, and realise where drug crime comes from, as well as the lack of quality control to the users (which is the main reason for deaths) the better!!  Until then all we can do is stand in awe of their stubbornness, and hope they change policy before anybody else gets hurt.
TAKE THE POWER AWAY FROM THE DEALERS AND THE REST WILL FALL INTO PLACE!!!
Nuff said, just thought I'd bring it to your attention, justin casey......
Keep up the good work mate,

is a 52 penised galactic being human or animal?  and what kind of ‘sexual morality’ do we project on the ladies of his harem?
fraser
i gotta say something re the
brian barritt piece. i was grateful to matthew / los angeles for expressing how i felt quite precisely here (tho' i disagreed with him on the cats, which i thought was funny; had the contributor substituted dogs, however, i wonder if u'd have
published it :)
no is the answer to that. u can't drop dogs from a great height as they don't have the same reflexes :)

the
barritt piece i thought was unremitting shite, and probably offensive to any woman with half her head screwed on, which i'm sure you'll agree is most of us. thoroughly phallocentric, it objectifies, uses and abuses women, no question about it. can't u see it? this guy has *nothing* to do with zen (i don't care if he was a friend of suzuki roshi) & everything to do with jerking off. and i'm surprised to see u defending him on the pretext that it’s somehow enlightening. on the contrary, i thought it brought the whole tone of the UP down by several notches, which is truly a pity

ditto to a lesser extent the
great wired zippy stuff. perhaps u had to be there buti read the first one twice (the david dei piece) & couldn’t make head nor tail of it, except that it didn't reflect very well on any of those concerned, including both the author & yr good self. so i was a little mystified as to why u put it in, but let it go, only to find the whole monster raising its head again & again. confusing, pointless and IMHO utterly crap.

so this led me to thinking what the point of the
UP is? is it to promote consciousness raising, or to promote a hedonistic callit sex'n'drugs'n'rock&roll ethos?
heh? betcha don't answer this one :)

keep on with da provocation man, but lay of with da porn -- there's too much of it out there already
rosie, gambia
- hmm.  first the wired zippy stuff.  i published david dei’s piece for the same reason i’m publishing yours  because the UP’s not about pushing some particular viewpoint but rather pushing the Let’sFindOutForOurselves/ Question Everything&TakeNothingOnAuthority. ‘scientific’ approach (Science = Knowing).  we can disagree, we will disagree, but we shall hold to our search for an Agreement that’s much much larger.
not many people in europe are familiar with the gigantic media storm the
Zippy Pronoia Tour To US caused.  we were basically warning america to WAKE UP & CHANGE, telling them that Rave Culture was a real chance for a peaceful renaissance.  most didn’t want to hear it, wanted to dwell completely on the wunnerful new tecno the super-rich elite’s children had to play with, many people hated us for saying it, but i, for one, felt the attempt had to be made (and to be honest little suspected how completely atomised, paranoid and government controlled the culture actually was.  still, we did manage to project some very intelligent and consciousness-raising ideas into the media before rave became big enuff over there that the media started demonising it totally.  u might want to check my speech at stanford university on RAVE CULTURE & THE END OF THE WORLD  as we know it.’
www.parallel-youniversity.com/frase
that was my main aim, and i’m proud of how successful the tour was in that respect, even though it was to take the Twin Terrors PLUS another year of bullyish bravado and bomming b4 the american people finally began to wake up and take a proper look at their culture and wot their government had been doing in their name to pay for their nice toys.
on
brian barritt, heh heh :)  brian is an authentic alternative hero who’s been living and describing and encouraging alternative culture since the days of the beats, participating fully in beat, hippy, punk and now raver.  few have done that.  so i would pause for some very deep thought before i criticised his motives  i’d look inside first to spot my own blocks.
‘contemporary culture’ (basically an inner refection of the cruel schizophrenia outside) includes a new french art movie where 2 girls hitch around france picking up guys and murdering them.  another french best seller is by an ex-government minister of culture, a lady who frankly reveals a life of intellectual/animalistic orgies in which she literally was screwed by hundreds of people to whom she was never introduced and whose face she actually never even saw!  why do i mention these?  well, the movie could NEVER have been made by a guy  does this cast the merest flicker of light on a deep contradiction at the heart of our current attitudes to sex?
note that brian’s book contains
not the slightest trace of cruelty or abuse against the will of any other.  it’s funny, rabelaisian, set in space with mostly off-planeters.  do we define a being with 52 penises as human or animal?  if he and all the ladies in the harem are animals would there be anything offensive here?  i leave it for now for u to sort thru your own thoughts on these matters.
as for the book, well, it’s written so matter of factly that one is simply forced to accept that, all outside restraints having been removed, this is probably ruffly the direction our society is going.  now i’ve no particular view either way on this, but i have to pause to wonder where, when impersonalised orgy type social recreation is the norm, will artists’ imaginations (healthily) go?  and i’d venture that, in such a society twenty years from now (when most of us will be nearly past it and had the stage yanked from beneath our feet by several brand new generations) it might be exactly this type of playful, harmless, amusing and teasingly wise and broadminded kind of writing that will be in demand.
disagree with me.  but don’t start thinking U NO where it’s at and anything  else can’t be ‘serious’, ok?  that’s how wars start.
lastly, if the
UP can be defined in any simple way, it’s for a mature POST PC culture, ok? :)

//YOU FEEDBACK   WHEN BUSH COME TO SHOVE
JANUARY 2001 - Trent Lott Questioned by the Observer, London

OBSERVER:  Do you think it is fair that President Clinton is being accused of not preventing the attack on the USS Cole?

LOTT:
Well, in reality, that is the way it is in America, and it’s what makes us a great nation.  True leaders must handle difficult situations or have competent people who handle those situations.  Sources did give information of a general nature to the Administration and it is obvious that an attack still occurred.  This is a more impeachable' offense than what was brought before the Congress. (antidepressant blowjob for key staff member)
Fortunately, George Bush will, in just a few days, become our President.  I can assure you that such situations will not be mishandled by his Administration.  However general the information might be, the President-elect will act with authority to prevent such tragedies

Just produced by Tourism Concern, it's an expanded and updated version of their earlier Community Tourism Guide, and lists hundreds of 'community-based' tourism projects that use tourism to benefit poor rural communities in the South.
It also highlights Native-run tourism in North America and Australasia, and constitutes the world's first guidebook to
'fairly-traded' tourism, with practical details for arranging holidays.
