EVIL TRACKING CHIP TO BE IMPLANTED IN //YOU!  YOUR FREEDOM IS AT RISK!
BOYCOTT AND PROTEST APPLIED DIGITAL SOLUTIONS THIS IS WHY!
The maker of an implantable human ID chip has launched a national campaign to promote the device, offering $50 discounts to the first 100,000 people who register to get imbedded with the microchip.

Applied Digital Solutions has coined the tagline "Get Chipped" to
market its product,
VeriChip.
The rice-size device costs $200.  Those implanted must also pay for the doctor's injection fee and a monthly $10 database maintenance charge, said ADS spokesman Matthew Cossolotto.
         The
VeriChip emits a 125-kilohertz radio frequency signal that transmits its unique ID number to a scanner.  The number then accesses a computer database containing the client's file.  Customers fill out a form detailing the information they want linked to their chip when they undergo the procedure.
         Earlier this week,
ADS announced that the FDA had ruled that the VeriChip was not a regulated device when used for "security, financial and personal identification/safety applications."
The agency's sudden approval of the microchip came despite an FDA investigator's concern about the potential health effects of the device in humans.  (Microchips have been used to track animals for years.)

The company is marketing the device for a variety of security applications, including:

* Controlling access to physical structures, such as government or private sector offices or nuclear power plants.  Instead of swiping a smart card, employees could swipe the arm containing the chip.
* Reducing financial fraud. In this scenario, people could use their chip to withdraw money from ATMs; their accounts could not be accessed unless they were physically present.
* Decreasing identity theft.  People could use the chip as a password to access their computer at home, for example.

Cossolotto said ADS has gotten "hundreds" of inquiries from people interested in being implanted.
Meanwhile, privacy advocates are wondering about the spectre of forced chippings.
"(ID chips) are a form of electronic leashes, a form of digital control," said Marc Rotenberg, executive director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center"What happens if an employer makes it a condition of employment for a person to be implanted with the chip? It could easily become a condition of release for parolees or a requirement for welfare."
- and remember, once it’s accepted it ALWAYS becomes ‘normal’.

Rotenberg said EPIC has filed a Freedom of Information Request to learn more details about the FDA's sudden approval of VeriChip.
The chip has also alarmed some Christians, who fear it is the biblical "
Mark of the Beast"; dozens of websites allude to the Satanic implications of the technology.
The company has consistently tried to allay such fears since the chip debuted in December 2001.

"It's a voluntary device that we think has enormous utility," Cossolotto said. "This is intended for good purposes."
ADS said seven health-care facilities, located in Arizona, Texas, Florida and Virginia, have signed up to distribute the chip, in addition to mobilizing a large bus the company has outfitted as a mobile "chipping station."  Would-be customers can also register online.
The company plans to develop a prototype for an implantable GPS ID chip by the end of the year.

IZZIT THE END OF DAYS? or RE-BIRTH?
the following email arrives from a dear old friend from way back in the ‘60s with whom i travelled many a trip.  he’s just got back to america from a short break to see the sons he scattered around the globe and sounds a bit down  and no wonder!...

Since they caught the sniper in Washington, all you hear on the news over here is the discussion about which state is going to get the chance to execute him. No one in the press seems to want to ask the simple question, "Why did he do it?".
I guess they feel that every Americanalready knows the answer to that one: this blackguy was full of an
inarticulate, pent-up rage that everyone who functionsat the bottom ofthis society feels - the rage that comes from someone else eating your lunch, fucking you up the asshole, and laughing about it all the way to the bank. SHIT, EVERYONE KNOWS THAT! Butyou’resupposed to pretend you’re doing fine, get cancer or heart disease and suffer quietly, and certainly not takeyour unexpressed miseryout on the general population.
It’s the same reason we don’t ask why the terrorists hit the
Trade Towers, why suicide bombers blow up Israeli buses, and - almost every day now - why another miserable American asshole shoots up a school.

It is truly the end of days, old buddy.
john the rat / san francisco
to stop yourself getting too depressed, dearest john, what u got to notice (and remember from your trip out of the asylum) is that it's not 'The World' or 'Life' - and i hate to think how this will sound to you over there - but AMERICA that's in its end game.  which it needs to be because the whole world had generally been improving (the Drug War was clearly winding down, some form of welfare state was slowly becoming the norm, personal expression was almost completely free etc etc and even Clinton over there in puritan america certainly wasn't fighting the trend) until Bush bought and cheated his way to the table, since when america's been dragging the world down its own sick path into its self-created insanity, an underlying sickness which his clique embodies that's been lurking in america's innards since, oh, when we launched the pronoia zippy tour to offer america a chance to rebirth itself via its new idealistic youth, or since about the time kennedy got shot maybe.  or when they were wiping out the indians?
am afraid the sickness has now reached its 'natural level'.  my guess is that copy cat snipering is the new level of the day over there from now on.
izzit the final days or izzit Re-Birth?  read the DURANGO PEACE MARCH in this issue and then consider re-dedicating your life or summat like that :)  you're on the Front Line now, THERE ARE NO INNOCENT BYSTANDERS THERE NEVER WERE, but u got to grok deep that the Individual Consumer can NEVER get Satisfaction, we’ve all been sold a False Dream that took a zillion bucks and peasant deaths to deliver, and now even the option we always thought we had of just ‘dropping out’ (into Private Consumerism notice!) has been removed.
and it’s good for us, dear old friend, because it was always true, that’s what the zillion dollar dream was meant to make us forget, and it’s failing :)

Fraser - sorry to 'piss on someone’s parade' but the 'Bush Be Afraid' letter in last week’s (as ever fookin brilliant) UP!er, actually made me LAFF.
Which is something of a problem because it's not really funny.  But
why should Bush 'be afraid', he's president of the US of fookin A, sits behind a large desk and several nukes, protected by the 'best' armed forces in the world, with the ability to decimate, to pin-point accuracy, small villages in Afghanistan
Okay, so I'm sick, butifthere’s a credible plan

1 DURANGO PEACE MARCH = A THOUSAND E-PETITIONS?
OR:  1000 E-PETITIONS >> 1 DURANGO PEACE MARCH?
Bush's Iraqi policy finally managed to galvanize even the silenced opposition in remote Durango, Colorado. Three city blocks of small downtown Durango were filled on Saturday with demonstrators and banners and drums. My favourite was: What's Behind The Bush??

The emotions of relief, and gratitude for the turnout, were written on the faces of those gathered...
finally having the palpable evidence of not being aloneIt takes bodies in the streets. The internet gives us superb tools for logistics. But if fear keeps us off the streets, all the chatter of the net feels impotent.
Real bodies taking back the streets galvanizes courage in others.
Real bodies in the streets changes the logos of dissent from the safety of the hypothetical, re-norming it to "yes we can...we really can." It drew people out of stores and shopping to clap and wave and the marchers roared. Organized dissent is being resurrected in far-flung places.

Thank-you the Misters' Bush for being such catalysts. What a unique legacy, to bring so many out from the slumbers of the minutiae of everyday life to risk marching in public again! To go down in history as dissent-a-generators of such potency!

Psycho-historians will debate the relevance of the nature/nurture ratios in this ability (of the Super Rich) to unwittingly foment dissent, but we can only offer thanks to whichever of Gods' amusements gave us this proclivity's gift.

Georgia / Durango
- well said!
all our endless envisioning of potential positive futures is a waste of space in the youniverse (and actually aids the should-be-losing side) if it doesn't eventually, chemically and otherwise, result in heart-driven human bodies out there actualising the only canvas on which they can be painted.

unless, of course, you're a theravadin, dreaming of joining the elite yourself, and grossly under-selling orgasm for mere individuality :)

it seems to be turning out that the alternative fyouture doesn't just grow and grow until it becomes dominant (like bread, as terence used to say) the dinosaur culture actually gets desperate and goes mad and finally reveals itself for what it's always been - competitive to the point of war-making - and the logical inevitability of the official competitive fyouture becomes obvious to all - eternal war of one part against another.

maybe those japanese anthologists didn't observe carefully enuff after the 100th monkey picked up those potatoes.  maybe, if they had, they woulda noticed that the true galvaniser for the entire colony's overnight change hadn’t been simply that a certain proportion of the population had already changed but, rather, had been when a buncha grizzled old die-hard alpha males (always males!), in an attempt to turn the clock Back To Banana republicanism and to Close Pandora’s Box Once And For All, had instead kickstarted a general “wow” shit! there's just gotta be another way’ experience in the Gene-Pool!!!

Campaign To Help All People to Grab Their Own Destiny Back (C.H.A.P  G.O.D  B. :)
AN AD GEORGE BUSH SHOULD LOVE
"I HELPED BLOW UP A BALI NIGHTCLUB
- BY DRIVING MY SUV TO WORK EVERY DAY!"
By Arianna Huffington
The Bush team's ridiculous and wildly inflammatory anti-drug ads are still running in heavy rotation - the ones where innocent-looking, middle-class teensadmit their culpability for the consequences of the drug trade. "I helpedblow up buildings," says one doe-eyed youth.

So if that’s legitimate logic, and the president says it is, then we could turn the tables on him by starting a little ad campaign of our own to sabotage another misguided Bush campaign:
the War on Conservation.

The thought occurred to me after the startling announcement that the administration was taking precious time off from an actual, necessary war - the one on terrorism - to sue the state of California for daring torequire that carmakers put more energy-efficient models on the road.

Turning the letter of the federal
Clean Air Act against its clear intent, Department of Justice lawyers lined up with the administration's oil cronies to argue that, if California's cars comply with the lax federal standard, the state cannot impose a tougher one.

So how about using the same shock-value tactics the administrationuses in the drug war to confront the public with the ultimate - and much more linearly linked - consequences of their energy wastefulness?
Imagine a soccer mom in a Ford Excursion (11 mpg city, 15 mpg highway) saying,
"I'M BUILDING A NUCLEAR BOMB FOR SADDAM HUSSEIN."
Or a mob of solo drivers toodling down the freeway at 75 mph shouting in unison,
"WE'RE BUYING WEAPONS THAT WILL KILL AMERICAN SOLDIERS! YAHOO!"

It's not just a fantasy.  Last week, talking to my friend Scott Burns, co-creator of the "Got Milk?" campaign, I was delighted to hear that he already had two ad scripts ready to go.  The first one feels like an old Slim Fast commercial. Instead of "I lost 50 pounds in two weeks" the ad cuts to different people in their SUVs: "I GASSED 40,000 KURDS," "I HELPEDHIJACK AN AIRPLANE," and then in unison: "We did it all by driving to work in our SUVs."

The second opens on a man at a gas station, and features a cute kid's voice-over  throughout:  "THIS IS GEORGE."  Then we see a close-up of a gas pump.  "THIS IS THE GAS GEORGE BUYS FOR HIS CAR."  Next we see a guy in a suit.  "THIS IS THE OIL COMPANY EXECUTIVE WHO MAKES MONEY ON THE GASGEORGE BUYS."  Close-up on al-Qaida training film footage:  "THIS IS THE TERRORIST ORGANIZATION SUPPORTED BY MONEY FROM THE COUNTRY WHERE THE OILCOMPANY DOES BUSINESS."  It's followed by footage of 9/11:  "WE ALL KNOW WHAT THISIS."  And it closes on a wide shot of bumper-to-bumper traffic:  "THE BIGGESTWEAPON OF MASS DESTRUCTION IS PARKED IN YOUR DRIVEWAY."  Pretty effective, no?

Can the administration seriously deny that oil dollars do, actually, finance a spreading slick of evil in the world today?  In Iraq, oil money has kept Saddam's repressive regime afloat even in the midst of tough U.N. sanctions.  According to a report just released by the CIA, Saddam has beenspending his oil money on conventional arms and weapons of mass destruction, while starving and torturing his own people.

In Saudi Arabia, our second largest foreign supplier of oil, themoney you spend at the pump over here pays for a feudal monarchy that gorges itself on excess while bankrolling terrorist mischief abroad with its (guilt-driven) support of suicide bombers.

Would it be so painful for us to slow down the intravenous drip ofoil that keeps these hideously anti-American regimes alive?  There are car companies with electric and hybrid cars already on the market.  And a littlepressure on our wasteful ways could unleash a new wave of good old American inventiveness.

But instead of applying the marketing skills it uses for its wrongheaded drug war to the eminently worthwhile cause of saving energy,
BushInc. has sided with the Enrons of the world to stifle energy-saving technology and keep America in an artificially prolonged state of dependence.

Of course, waiting for the Bush administration to get religion on energy conservation would be about as fruitful as waiting for Saddam to welcome U.S. inspectors to his palaces.  It ain't gonna happen.  Unless, thatis, the public makes it happen. Anyone willing to pay for a people's adcampaign to jolt our leaders into reality?

#1 CLIMATE CRIMINAL ESSOCLOSED’ FOR A DAY
WOT WERE U DOING LAST FRIDAY?!  DRIVING YOUR SUV TO THE BEACH?  BAKING COOKIES?  PUFFIN’?  WATCHING FOOTBALL?  SHAGGIN’?
WELL, YOU COULDA BEEN CLOSING DOWN EVERY PETR0L PUMP IN LUXEMBOURG DRESSED IN FUNNY HATS.  SOUND LIKE FUN?  SAVING THE PLANET AND YOURSELF IS THE BEST FUN IN TOWN FULL STOP :)
!!!Greenpeace shuts down Esso!!!
Every pump in Luxembourg ‘occupied’!
While the world's nations talked at a conference in India about the Kyoto protocol and how to stop climate change, Greenpeace took action to stop the world's #1 climate criminal in an entire nation.
They declared the nation of Luxembourg  known as the “
fuel pump of Europe” - an Esso-free zone for a day.
600 volunteers from 31 countries ‘swarmed’ in Luxembourg to take on the world's biggest oil corporation's continuing and blatant interference in international climate politics.  Every single one of
Esso's 28 petrol stations was targeted with peaceful protests, and no Esso oil flowed from retail pumps in the country for the entire day.
The stations were blocked by caution tape, "
CLOSED" signs, and. oh yes, volunteers chained to pumps or across entrances.
"90% of people going by supported us with waves and thumbs up" reported one partygoer, eh, activist.  No reports of arrests, though one activist at a Larochette station reported:  “This police officer told us the manager had filed a complaint, but he had no instruction to remove us.  He asked us 'If I make you leave, you’ll just come back, right?' and left us alone."
Late in the day, Esso reportedly filed an injunction against Greenpeace to demand an end to the protest.
Greenpeace’s Gerd Leipold, who appeared at Wasserbillig, the world's largest petrol station, dressed in an
Exxon Tiger costume, stated: “We were able to explain very well to people who witnessed the action that we had every reason to hit Esso."

When it comes to Climate Change, all oil companies are bad, but Esso, also known as ExxonMobil or Mobil, is by far the worst.  Not only is it the biggest, but it uses its huge financial clout to ensure it can keep polluting the atmosphere with greenhouse gases without any limitations.  A key player in the USA's decision not to be part of the Kyoto Protocol - the only international agreement aimed at controlling the greenhouse emissions that are hurting our climate -  Esso denies climate change is a real problem, has tried to hijack the climate debate through the use of front groups, flawed science and large political contributions (Bush’s biggest), and refuses to spend a single cent on clean renewable energy.
         Luxembourg is famous for "
petrol tourism", offering cheap fuel to visiting motorists from all over Europe.

Dear Fraser,
Wow!!!!
Funny how I only got round to reading the 2nd half of the
UP! today, with the 'BUSH BODIES' section, and only an hour ago I heard the news that Senator Paul Wellstone (Democrat, Minnesota) was killed with his wife and daughter in a ... charter plane crash!!
Please publish this because it's eerily convenient that we’re only 10 days from crucial elections where Republicans are trying to take over the Senate, thus making us a
SERIOUSLY right-wing nation (borderline police state).

Wellstone was not only a very liberal Democrat, but also one of the top Washington watch-dogs in charge of monitoring political machinations.  The Republicans are duly trying every way to sabotage the Democratic candidates, as they did in New Jersey by revealing the campaign finance scandal causing Robert Torricelli to resign only one month before the election.  Then they tried to block the democrats from replacing him because it was "too close to the election date" - logic?
Thankfully the Supreme Court wouldn’t even hear their case... but in the final week
I’ll be watching what else they will come up with.  Not that I’d be surprised, but if Wellstone's death was truly not an accident, and his wife and daughter died too to protect the fat pigs in office, I shall be left with officially no more hope for our country.
niki /  new york

NOW READ THIS, WRITTEN LAST MAY!!!!!!!
"Paul Wellstone is a hunted man.  He’s not just another Democrat on White House political czar Karl Rove's target list, in an election year when the Senate balance of power could be decided by the voters of a single state.  Rather, getting rid of Wellstone is a passion for Rove, Dick Cheney, George W. Bush and the special-interest lobbies that fund the most sophisticated political operation ever assembled by a presidential administration."

A democrat congressman from California met a republican congressman from Iowa met at a golf course near Washington D.C. and decided to tee off together.  As they became better acquainted, it came out that they had both been elected because their opponent had died a few weeks before the election.  The republican's opponent died in a tragic plane crash while returning to Washington, and the democrat's opponent died in an earthquake.
After playing a few holes, the republican asked the democrat:
"One thing I just don't understand - how do you guys arrange an earthquake?"

WHAT ARE YOU WILLING TO PAY FOR PEACE?
READY TO FLY OUT AND JOIN THE IRAQ PEACE TEAM?!
“How could this have happened?  How could the German people have allowed this?  Where were the 'good' Germans?"

You can't be a pacifist only in peacetime.  You can't be a pacifist by yelling at your tv set, or forwarding a million emails to everyone you know.  Pacifism isn't that passive, or easy.  By definition it is and always has been a radical challenge to every element of worldly power and violence.

I'm in Iraq with a handful of other Americans: an Indiana college student, a recent journalism graduate from Washington State, a Pennsylvania college student, a history teacher from Chicago, a paramedic from South Carolina, and a writer from New York.  More are joining us.  By the end of October, we'll have over 30 people on our team.  By December, our numbers will be over 100.  We're here to tell the stories of the Iraqi people; to put our lives on the line to stop this war.

Living in Baghdad, you wouldn't know there was a war. The streets bustle with people on their way to work or school.  In the evenings the parks are full of kids playing soccer, people visiting with family and friends.  There are no tanks in the streets, no soldiers marching, no civil defence drills, and - other than foreigners like us - no one here seems to be stocking up on food or water.  Is it denial?  Sheer disbelief?  Some inner despair?  I honestly don't know.

It hurts that Baghdad is so beautiful, with a unique and striking blend of traditional and modern architecture.  I love the city's parks, its wide, tree-lined boulevards - each avenue sprouting date palms and poplars.  This is truly a green city.  I told a cab driver that Baghdad was a beautiful city.  He just looked hard at me.  "Baghdad is not beautiful, Baghdad is tired" he said.

We hear it over and over again - just below the surface - a melody of melancholy, resignation, and fear.  People quietly complain,
"What more can America do to us?"  We visit a high school, and the kids want to make absolutely sure we really understand that they're not natural-born killers or terrorists.  A teacher lets us know that his 8-year-old asks him every day if today's the day he's going to die.

Ask an Iraqi about
"liberation," and they'll laugh at you with a bitter mirth.  If the U.S. doesn't bomb the civilian infrastructure again, and if the government falls fast, and if the army doesn't break-up along ethnic and religious lines - then only a few thousand innocents will die.  But if Bush bombs the water and power systems like his dad did in '91, then tens of thousands will die from the resulting epidemics.  If the army falls apart, there could be a civil war that makes past conflicts in Lebanon or Bosnia look like schoolyard brawls.  And if food aid distributed by the Iraqi government under the Oil-for-Food program is disrupted for more than a few weeks, UNICEF is warning there will be country-wide famine.

When will Americans wake up to the fact that we are not the only real people on this planet; that our security cannot depend on the insecurity of everyone else?

We don't often have the opportunity to speak with officials here, but when we do we always raise concerns about prisons, extra judicial killings, and state-directed violence.  Our status as Americans gives us this luxury, in a way that Iraqis do not have for themselves.  That's uncomfortable and troubling, and if it strikes some as hypocritical for us to be here as pacifists, I can understand that.  But it strikes me as much more hypocritical to speak out against a foreign government for killing innocents - while facilitating the killing of countless more by our own government through our silence and our tax dollars.  We apologize for no one but ourselves.

My government may not care, they may be intent on war no matter what, but I’m here because I choose to believe that if Americans knew what was being done in our names, we wouldn't allow it.
The alternative is madness.

It's disgusting that millions being threatened with massive destruction isn't "news," yet Americans joining them is.  But if the only way to get anyone to pay attention is to be in Baghdad when the bombs fall, so be it.  We're here.

Our hotel isn't fancy, but at least it isn't close to anything "strategic."  Our risks are the same as the other 5 million people in Baghdad, the other 24 million people in Iraq.  As our team's numbers grow, we'll turn the hotel into our own hostel, living 5 or 6 to a room.

Milan Kundera once wrote,
"The struggle of man against power is the struggle of memory against forgetting."  We're here to be part of that struggle.

We asked Mohammed Ghani Hekmat, perhaps the most prominent artist in Iraq, and one of the kindest men I've ever met, what he thought of the American people.  He was working on a series of life-size reliefs of the Stations of the Cross, when the 1991 Gulf War happened.  The windows in his studio were blown out by the explosions.  His voice filled with anger:
"They're innocent, like children!” he accused.

Well, we're here because
we know we're not innocent.  Being here is our part in the war against terrorism: humanizing Iraqis in the eyes of Americans, humanizing Americans in the eyes of Iraqis - taking direct responsibility for what's done in our names.

Our government, our country - our people - have killed hundreds of thousands of human beings in Iraq since 1990, and we're about to compound that atrocity with another war that, if it goes badly, will likely kill hundreds of thousands more.

When the Allies liberated the death camps in 1945, the entire Western
world was absolutely shocked.
“How could this have happened?  How could the German people have allowed this?  Where were the 'good' Germans?"

Today, I know where the good Americans are: they're in Iraq, and they're organizing in the streets of America - laying their lives on the line to prevent the mass destruction of human life.  We get what we pay for in this life.  I don't want to die.  I’m scared for my life.  But this storm is fast upon on us.  This is the moment when we all must ask - WHAT ARE WE WILLING TO RISK FOR PEACE?

IRAQI NATIONAL CONGRESS
WOULD HAND OVER IRAQI OIL TO U.S.
It's official.  The INC cannot agree on forming a government in exile, but they sure as hell know how to tear up an oil contract.
Sharif Ali Bin Al Hussein, spokesman for the main Iraqi opposition group the Iraqi National Congress (INC), told
Reuters in an interview that his group would open the oil sector to all companies, including the U.S. majors.
"We would review the Russian and French contracts in particular although it is not an automatic revocation. You have to bear in mind a lot of the deals were done by a dictator."

A TIME COMES WHEN SILENCE IS BETRAYAL, AND THAT TIME IS NOW
Dan Handelman is haunted by an image of Iraq that most Americans never see on television.
The image is of a frail two-year-old slowly dying of dehydration in a Basra hospital while his mother sits next to him, helpless to stop the ravages of diarrhoea and infection.
He is, according the
World Health Agency, one of the 5,000 Iraqi children who die of water-borne diseases and malnutrition each month.  He’s dying because the U.S. systematically targeted water purification plants and electrical generators in the 1991 Gulf War.  We certainly didn't bomb those targets by accident.
Iraq lost several thousand civilians in Gulf War I, and the Pentagon projects Gulf War II will kill another 10,000, not counting those who will die from the consequences of bombing.
All of this will be carried out in our name unless we do something to stop it.
"A time has come when silence is betrayal," Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. said about Vietnam, another war that targeted civilians, "that time is now."

THE LONDON PEACE DEMO REALLY
WAS HAFFA MILLION OFFICIAL!
The BBC is now acknowledging the size of the London demo as 400,000:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/2285861.stm

The virtual blackout of the demo on news programmes the next day is one of the most shameful pieces of deceit in broadcasting, and is being compared to the miner's strike when BBC News reversed the footage of the Orgreave confrontation to make it look as if miners had charged at the police when in fact the opposite had happened.

SIGNED ANY EMAIL PEACE PETITIONS LATELY?!
I’ve received it at least a dozen times, asking me to send results to the UN at unicwash@unicwash.org.  But this UN web site has denounced the petition.

More than 200,000 Americans, however, have already joined an online petition run by the moveon movement.  They’re now asking for foreign signatures at

REV. SUN MYUNG MOON BACK IN BIZNESS
dear fraser,
this past weekend i attended a conference in Washington dc given by the
World Association of Non-Governmental Organizations. unbeknownst to me it was sponsored by rev. moon! they paid all accommodations and travel expenses for my organisation.
it was truly incredible, the programs started at 7am and ended at 10pm, apparently using exhaustion as a
mind-control tool.
- well known brainwashing technique, perfected by Scientology.

in the last session, on International Organizations, the family, and NGO's, i was horrified by the content. i sat through an hour and a half of Christian fundamentalism. one panellist stated as fact that family planning is a sin and does not work, condoms don’t work, evolution is a farce, those who work must stop supporting those who do not, homosexuality is a sin, gay marriage is destroying the nation through falling birth rates, and that overpopulation is a myth (ie. she didn't want Africans, Latin Americans, and Asians to take over the world.)

it was insulting and embarrassing.

the sessions were supposed to have time for questions and answers but, of course, they didn’t, lest someone dissent (which i made a point of doing).
so the moral of the story is
rev. moon is seeking power by controlling the NGO's of the world and, though i doubt he’ll have much success in the end, it seems he’s on his way.
he already has considerable monetary support and followers from all over the world. in fact, just after i made my scathing criticism of the intolerance expressed in the session, a man stood up and asked how to implement the policies in Ghana. just what we need!
be well,
liz / new york

The most savage war in the world
By Patrick Cockburn
Russian soldiers in Chechnya have a simple but direct method of stopping your car if it has Chechen number plates.  They fire a machine gun just in front of you, so close that the impact of the bullets makes mud spurt over your windscreen.
I‘ve never seen a country so ravaged by war.  The Chechen capital,
Grozny, is a great seascape of ruins, mile after mile of concrete buildings shelled and bombed in two wars.  In many villages, all the houses have been destroyed, their burnt rafters open to the sky.
Some of the damage is recent.  In other villages, wild flowers and small trees have covered what used to be busy streets and farmsteads.  Everywhere, fear is tangible.  Again and again, mothers whose sons had disappeared and who had heard a foreign journalist was in the area risked
Russian checkpoints to tell their stories.
I first went to
Chechnya in 1999, a few days after the Russian army had invaded the territory a second time.  As the Russian forces massed before advancing on Grozny, we visited the Chechen defence line.  Looking at the shallow trenches where the heavily outnumbered Chechen fighters were waiting, it was obvious they had no chance of stopping the Russian armour.

From the beginning the
Russians were determined to exclude the media, or allow it to cover the war only on Moscow's terms.  "Get the hell out of here or I'll throw you in jail right now!" shouted a beefy Russian colonel, giving me a shove backwards when I tried to enter Chechnya officially, on a Russian-controlled road.
But the
Chechens were also victims of self-inflicted wounds.  In their first triumphant conflict with the Russians in 1994-96, their cause had been covered sympathetically by the foreign  and much of the Russian  media.  Then kidnapping became the one growth industry in Chechnya, making the conflict more dangerous to report than any other in the world.
During the early days of the second war I was escorted by bodyguards provided by the
Chechen President, Aslan Maskhadov, who clearly thought we were in more danger from home-grown kidnappers than from the Russians.
Given their military superiority, the
Russians should have been able to consolidate the victories won in the first six months of the present war.  It did not happen because their army was a rabble, living off the land, killing and extracting bribes from their victims' families.  The savagery of the Russian occupation has reduced the Chechens to a state of desperation, of which the attack on the theatre in Moscow is the latest fruit.
