THE TOKYO NEW HUMAN BE-IN
REPORT ON THE FIRST OF THE GLOBAL NEW HUMAN BE-INS
On Wednesday, September 11th (9/11) the Tokyo Be-In was held in Meiji Park in the city.

2000 people attended, and the event was reported by the Japanese press - hippies, citizens, scholars, a female Member of the Diet, poets and many other artists attended.

‘60s Hippy Elders,
Msanori Ohe and Nanao Sakaki, were there too, the first now a writer and the latter a poet.

There were three stages in the park, one for
talks and debates, one for poets and the imagination, and one for, you guessed it, music and dancing.

A statement from Allen Cohen, conspirator behind the original 1967 BE-IN in San Francisco, was published in the official literature, and poetess Inko Saito read one of his poems at night on the poetry stage.

In the closing ceremony everyone held a lit candle and prayed world peace.

As one of the originators of the The Human-Be-In, and founder & editor of the San Francisco Oracle and still a believer in the ideals of Love Peace & Community, I extend my hand and heart to a new generation of brothers and sisters across the Pacific.  We face the necessity in this decade of uniting to overcome the old oil and nuclear regime that is choking the throat of the subtle beauty of the world.  We need a worldwide movement to bring us to a non-polluting alternative energy future based on the awareness of all beings intertwined in the alive wholeness of our planetary unity.  We must reach out to all the people of all religions and races and exclude intolerance and hatred from our social evolution.  The future of life on this planet depends on A World At Peace - a world that is capable of creative vision and international economic and social equality.  Rise up, brothers and sisters, we are at the beginning of a great and necessary adventure!

“Everyone says to me it will be good to get back to work, good to be busy, take my mind off the sadness over my mother’s death, as if not aware that what I really might need is for it to be the other way around.  At my family's insistence, I tried going on TV a few weeks ago to talk about the corporate crooks roaming our great land. 
I had decided to give it a try, and gave it my best shot, and ended up feeling so empty and more alone.  I had agreed to go on "Crossfire" and Donahue (thank God for this guy!) on the condition that I would not have to have one of those stupid cable news shouting matches with three rightwingnuts where no one can hear (or wants to hear) what's being said.
 
“They agreed to the terms, but as Bob Novak asked his first question about aren't my true motives to destroy capitalism and make America a socialist country, I just sat there for a moment and didn't respond.  I thought I would just take the microphone off and leave - who needs these f-----s! - but then, my dad was with me in the studio and I looked over at him and smiled, and then into the camera I said, yes, Bob, that is exactly what I intend to do and, considering more people have bought my book than any other non-fiction book in America this year, I guess that means that the majority of Americans agree with me on this point, so look out Bob 'cause we're going to seize your money first!

"Of the four categories, nuclear is the one that was most thoroughly eradicated; two aspects of the program, weaponization and enrichment.  Enrichment is 100 percent eradicated.  We destroyed the facilities.  We destroyed the means of production. And of all the aspects of weapons of mass destruction, this is the one that's most difficult to reconstitute.  It would require a major reacquisition of technology, almost all of which is controlled technology, very difficult to obtain even under the most favorable of circumstances, especially not easy when you have economic sanctions and the entire world's collective intelligence apparatus looking at you.  And then you'd have to rebuild the facilities, which again is eminently detectable, not something that's done underground or in a basement or in a cave.  And again, void of any data or facts that show Iraq has done this, don't need to worry about enrichment.

"Which means if Iraq is to have a weapon, they need to acquire the fissile material, the highly enriched uranium or plutonium, from an outside source.  And contrary to popular belief, there just is not a viable market out there for highly enriched uranium.  It's not on the market. There aren’t  sellers out there.  It's not something that's readily available. Iraq does have a weapons design.  They have solved the problem of designing and building a device and I believe it's possible for Iraq to construct this device in Iraq today using indigenous capabilities.  But that device minus highly enriched uranium or plutonium is just a very expensive high-explosive bomb. It's not a nuclear weapon.  So again, I'm not too worried about Iraq's nuclear program."

Dear Mr. Bush: It is quite likely, considering the blank, empty smirk with which you greet the world, that you may not recognize the document I, with humility and not arrogance, update below. The original was the statement of men who staked their lives to affirm our right to live free; and they penned their names in abhorrence of and opposition to a tyrant with whom you share more than a name.

Although the repeated mendacities of your administration are beyond comprehension -- far greater by many powers than your predecessor's peccadilloes with Whitewater, White House travel agents or even Monica's semen-stained dress -- you earn credit for telling one chilling truth. Shortly after your brother enabled your undermining of our democracy by illegally disenfranchising thousands of Florida voters, followed by the five Republicans on the Supreme Court halting recounts and selecting you president, you made a surprisingly candid jest to congressional leaders, saying:

"If this were a dictatorship, this would be a heck of a lot easier."  Laughing at your own humor - a malignant hahaha considering the  hundreds of thousands of Americans who have died battling tyranny and totalitarianism - you then quipped: "Just so long as I'm dictator."

The nation should have paid attention.

When in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for a people to dissolve the political bands imposed on them by their rulers, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness
- and this great nation codified these Rights in a Constitution and Amendments that are regarded by the world as mankind's greatest beacons of Freedom. Governments derive their powers from the consent of the governed, and whenever Government usurps power for its own end and for the immoral enrichment of elites, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government. ...

Perhaps Americans won't be forced to embark on a new revolution, Mr. Bush.  But the path you have set for the country may make that inevitable.

Like
Rome, you are transforming our society from a republic to an imperium that seeks to subjugate its own people and dominate world affairs with nuclear weapons and threats of "first strikes" against those you, with mercurial disregard for history and logic, deem evil.

Your affinity for the word
"evil" raises questions of how in touch you are with reality - you embrace horribly repressive regimes, from China to Uzbekistan to Malaysia; you seek to ignite a new Vietnam in Colombia; yet you cheer the attempted overthrow of democracy in Venezuela.  You side with Libya in opposing an international court that would bring war criminals to justice - your Alice-in-Wonderland congressional allies have passed a law that would allow us to invade the Netherlands to "rescue" Americans on trial by the court.  That invasion may happen - in Europe, news agencies (studiously ignored by mainstream U.S. media) report with substantial documentation that our military was complicit in the torture and slaughter of hundreds, possibly as many 2,500, Taliban and al-Qaeda prisoners, many of them roasted to death in sealed cargo containers.

In the one area of the world where U.S. authority needs to be applied the Middle East - you have totally capitulated to the awful
Ariel Sharon, a man committed to only one tactic, endless war.  Yes, Yassir Arafat is awful, too (he was elected by majority of his people, however, a claim you can't make).  And, yes, Israel absolutely should have peace and secure borders.  But your non-solution of placing the entire burden for re-engaging a peace process on a people who have suffered under 35 years of military occupation is just, well, loopy to a degree that's almost criminal.

Put another way:
Have you no morals, Mr. Bush?

A Prince whose character is marked by every act which may define a Tyrant is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.  It is fitting for the People to ask: To whom do you answer?

Your constituency is obvious to those who look - the band of lawless corporate marauders who seek to loot the world's wealth, squander the planet's resources and gamble with American workers' salaries and savings.  It is not too extreme to say that you run a quisling puppet government for the pinstriped corporate warlords.

Theodore Roosevelt
, a real president, commented: "The things that will destroy America are prosperity-at-any-price, peace-at-any-price, safety-first instead of duty-first, the love of soft living and the get-rich-quick theory of life."  Even Teddy couldn't have envisioned the corruption and avarice of your corporate friends. These boardroom thieves -- to whom you have handed control of the government and economy - have seen their wealth increase by as much as 4,300 percent in the last two decades, paid for by the stagnant real incomes of most Americans.  Whereas America's foundation was freedom, truth and justice, your base is Enron, Global Crossing, Tyco, Carlyle Group, Halliburton and, most recently, WorldCom.

Moreover, pandering to raving religious fanatics - whose brand of
Christianity bears scant resemblance to the teachings of Jesus - you and your attorney general, John Ashcroft, threaten to substitute democratic rule with an intolerant theocracy.

Many of the Founding Fathers -- notably
Washington, Jefferson and Franklin - were not Christian at all, but were deist, the closest thing to atheist or agnostic in their time.  They greatly feared any mixing of government and religion, and sought to establish an impenetrable wall between the two.

Yet, when last week a federal appellate court in California sensibly ruled that the phrase
"under God" in the official Pledge of Allegiance was unconstitutional - it equates patriotism with acceptance of the monotheistic deity - you slimed our nation's founders by declaring the decision was "out of step with the traditions and history of America."

The cowed and servile Congress anxiously echoed your silliness.  A true leader might, instead, have observed that our nation's founders would not have confused symbols and rituals with real patriotism, and that they would have tolerated - indeed, encouraged - differences in beliefs and customs.

More than one true patriot has observed that it is the scoundrel who is first to wrap himself in the flag - just what you repeatedly do.  Your vice president and your attorney general have declared that criticism borders on treason.  At Ohio State University last month, those who would exercise their most American right, peaceful dissent, at a graduation ceremony where you spoke were told they would be ejected, denied their diploma and arrested.

When a long train of abuses and usurpations evinces a design to reduce Citizens under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.  The history of the present Prince, George W, is a history of repeated injuries and deceptions, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny.  To prove this, let facts be presented to a candid world.

The document that conceived our nation goes on to list the grievances against that earlier George.  It is remarkable, Mr. Bush, how many of the complaints have parallels with your administration. But a few stand out:

He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.  You, sir, have gutted environmental protections, cutting hundreds of millions of dollars from research and enforcement, abandoning deadlines for decreasing pollution, shifting the burden of toxic cleanups from corporate polluters to taxpayers.  You have snubbed the Kyoto Treaty that would seek to halt disastrous global warming -- at first belittling scientific proof, and then admitting the evidence but denying that any effort was worth undertaking.

You have assaulted hard-won advances in health care and public safety.  You have cut billions of dollars that would have gone to the nation's neediest children and families.  You have attempted to force poor women into marriages that are often abusive. You even have sought to end a program that gave free books to poor children - and, not surprisingly, you scrapped funding that taught children about the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and Citizenship.

You have beggared the government, turning surplus into a massive debt that will be paid by future generations.  Even worse, you increasingly shift the burden to the middle and working classes.  With your $1.35 trillion tax cut, 43 percent will go to the wealthiest 1 percent of the population.  The poorest will be lucky to get a dime. 

He has kept among us Standing armies. ... He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to Civil power.  Mr. Bush, you have used the Sept. 11 tragedy to expand the military budget to an unimaginable $400 billion - knowing full well that all of our expensive toys were insufficient to stop madmen armed with $5 box cutters.  You have reignited the nuclear arms race by changing policy from the elimination of weapons to the warehousing of old bombs and the creation of a new generation of hell-toys.

As substantial documentation shows, your saber rattling may itself have played a role in
9-11.  As has been reported by a few courageous journalists, your administration had ongoing negotiations with the Taliban to build an oil  your favorite substance - pipeline.  As Salon.com reported June 5, "When those talks stalled in July [2001], a Bush administration representative threatened the Taliban with military reprisals if the government did not go along with American demands. ... [That] raises new questions as to whether the U.S. military threat to the Taliban ... could have prompted al-Qaeda's Sept. 11 attack."

What is clear is that you and your administration had plenty of warning about possible terrorist attacks.  Yet you and your aides paid no attention, stripping funds from counter-terrorism programs to fuel new Pentagon hardware and the misbegotten "war on drugs."

Following the attack, you lied, claiming you had no warning.  If this were a parliamentary democracy, Mr. Bush, and if we had a Congress with backbone, there would have been calls for a vote of no confidence.  When you should have been vigilant, you were vacationing.  And, Ashcroft, knowing the danger to airlines, protected himself and left citizens at risk.

Shame, Mr. Bush, shame.

Now with unrestrained bellicosity, you threaten wars elsewhere.  How ironic that you target Iraq - when just prior to your election, Dick Cheney's Halliburton Co. through two foreign subsidiaries (to skirt U.S. laws) struck deals worth $24 million with Saddam Hussein's government.  When the cash was on the table, Cheney apparently saw no evil.

Repeatedly, you have trumpeted news of "threats" of terrorism to deflect attention from your administration's failings, especially the revelations about what you knew and when you knew it.  When
Jimmy Carter went to Cuba, you mined for votes in Miami by claiming Fidel Castro was brewing bio bombs, in all likelihood a fabrication.  Ashcroft blurted the news about the "dirty bomb" to obfuscate your belligerent attitude toward constitutional rights.

He has obstructed the Administration of Justice. ... He has made Judges dependent on his will alone.

First, you declared that we were at war (which, incidentally, if the goal was to capture Osama bin Laden, we haven't won).  But the bad guys, you said, weren't entitled to protection under the Geneva Convention.  Then, you rounded up 1,100, maybe more, "suspected terrorists," depriving them of rights.  And, since 9-11, not one has been charged.

You began hacking away at the Constitution with your unilateral decisions to create military tribunals, and rebuffing any assertion that the courts had a right to review your dictates.

All along, you promised that U.S. citizens' rights would be protected.  You
lied. Again.

Last month, you pronounced that you and you alone have the right to overturn the Constitution, and, relying on the most dubious interpretations of a 60-year-old Supreme Court decision, declare when a person is an enemy combatant.

Mr. Bush, if we let you, you will have taken away the most sacred and precious freedoms that Americans enjoy, the right to due process, the right to a trial and a jury of peers, the right to legal representation.

Meanwhile, the
FBI is again being transformed from honorable crime-fighters into the Thought Police.  Overturning three decades of restraint, following gross abuses under J. Edgar Hoover, agents again will be infiltrating religious and political groups, snooping into private lives, reading our e-mail and listening to our conversations - all without a shred of evidence of criminal wrongdoing.

Let's not forget the PATRIOT law.  It allows the government to enter and search our homes, without informing us. It allows the feds to tap phones and computers without probable cause of a crime.

Most egregiously, the law would define almost any act of civil disobedience in protest of government policies as "domestic terrorism."  Plus much, much more.

Trampling rights is horror enough.  But the reason sold to the American public is pure sham.  It wasn't for a lack of intelligence that Sept. 11 happened.  You had plenty of information.  Yet, you bungled, you failed to properly analyze and then act prudently.  It's absurd to say that the
FBI, with 27,000 employees and a $3 billion budget, is impotent before a gang of Third World madmen.

At the very least, you are guilty of incompetence and negligence.  It is too frightening to think what is left to be uncovered about your actions.  After all, a little more than a month ago, the press and public recoiled from the suggestions that you might have had any, even a little teensy warning before
9-11 of bin Laden's intentions.

But, whatever the degree of your culpability, what's clear is that the terrorist attacks ended the discussion about the questionable legitimacy of your presidency - and gave you the means to launch your quest to be what you wistfully told Congress you aspired to be:
a dictator.

Mr. Bush, for the good of the nation: Resign.

Hi Fraser - I was interested to see the "MDMA NOT HARMFUL" piece. Well it has to be said that most people fortunate enough to have tried this drug can absolutely verify this.  The problem with Ecstasy - like all drugs really - is that they are controlled by criminals interested only in profit, who do not (in general) have a conscience and do not provide a quality service.  Ecstasy pills are one example, containing junk - literally, and a concoction of other shite - mostly uppers and downers, if you’re lucky!  Pure MDMA is a fantastic drug,  When I've had the pleasure of tryingit, there is noteven a hint of "come-down blues" - just love.

iatrogenic is wrongly defined here.  an iatrogenic disease is one that's induced by medical treatment, like when a patient gets sick due to the side-effects of a drug, or develops an infection as a result of surgery. nothing imaginary about it. alsoit's unclear what is meant by the long-term effects of ecstasy being iatrogenic. what long-term effects?
- the long term effects the authorities have been banging on about since the drug first became popular in Rave Culture, the IMAGINARY ones, caused by doctors’ cultural conditioning and also, as I said in the piece, by ignorant and not even well meaning governments.

in the end i went back to the guardian article. it's absolutely opaque. typical of medical article written by a journalist with no medical background. the new webster's dictionary definition of iatrogenic (used in the article) is wrong.
- like most people with any kind of western so-called “scientific training” you’re adhering to a static definition of reality.  i first came across the word iatrogenic a decade or so when I discovered that the BIGGEST branch of medicine is exactly this!  fixing the damage their drugs and treatments have caused in the first place!  but language, like people and like human bodies, is NOT some fixed static thing with long latin names, it’s constantly changing and interacting and today the meaning of iatrogenic has come to include the psychological too.  and if u don’t believe me look it up in webster’s dictionary!

it also seems that the article was equally irritating to the scientists quoted, thru misrepresenting their report, since at the end is this:

There is the very real possibility that ecstasy use will cause long-term damage to the brain."
- now this sounds like part of iatrogenic medicine to me, like government and authority figures have been bringing pressure to bear, which will continue to create further imaginary fears and dis-ease in ravers for several more years..

seems to meit's the same with ecstasy as with mobile phones -- they don't know yet what the long-term effects might be. doesn't sound like anyone's particularly tuned into the short term effects either :) experiments on rat brains def. won't cut it. probably best to conduct a survey among users. has anyone done it? what i'm getting at is if you take e, you're likely to have a pretty clear idea of what the side effects might be short term & might be able to guess at the effects longer term.

Spam email often has a random number in the subject to fool crude filters which look for the words alone.

The reason why porn is filtered by the Spam Assassin program is that some people don't like themselves (or their kids) getting email inviting them to watch acts of rape, bestiality etc - some which arrive in the inbox with pictures.

Spam Assassin was right - the

NEWS MANAGEMENT IN THE LAND OF THE FREE
Interested in how the news is managed and manipulated by the corporate news media in order to keep people in the U.S. ignorant of
what's going on in the rest of the world and in the dark about how many of the people in the rest of world feels about their government?  Last week’s CNN on the Earth Summit in Johannesburg was a salient case in point.

CNN has three different Web sites: one for the U.S. market; one for Europe; and one for Asia.  Well, the European site had extensive coverage of Sec. of State Powell being booed and heckled for the Bush regime's environmental policies sabotaging international efforts.  In fact, you can't miss it; it's their top story with photo.

This is an important story, regardless of where you live in the world.  However, if you clicked on the U.S. site,
there was nothing at all - yes, nothing at all - on the Home Page about this happening.  (it's not the top story on the Asia CNN site but at least that story has a link in a prominent position of the front.)

No big surprise, of course.  Just business as usual, keeping the voters ignorant.  Revolution, anyone?

HYPOCRISY NOW!

If Saddam is so bad how come Cheney sold him the equipment to get his dilapidated oil fields up and running so he could afford to build such weapons?
Excuse me: I don't want to be tacky or anything, but hasn't it occurred to anyone in Washington that sending Vice President Dick Cheney out to champion an invasion of Iraq on the grounds that Saddam Hussein is a "murderous dictator" is somewhere between bad taste and flaming hypocrisy?
When
Dick Cheney was CEO of the oilfield supply firm Halliburton, the company did $23.8 million in business with Saddam Hussein, the evildoer "prepared to share his weapons of mass destruction with terrorists."   So if Saddam is so bad how come Cheney sold him the equipment to get his dilapidated oil fields up and running so he could afford to build such weapons?

LET THEM FEED THEIR BABIES WITH OIL
In 1998, while the United States was consistently pressuring the U.N. to stop exports of medicine and other needed supplies on the grounds they could have "dual use,"  the United Nations passed a resolution allowing Iraq to buy spare parts for its oilfields!!  As the former Secretary of Defence under Bush the Elder, Cheney was in a particularly vulnerable position on the hypocrisy of doing business with Iraq.  (in 1991, though, after the Gulf War, Cheney told a group of oil industry executives he was emphatically against trying to topple Hussein.)

HERE’S YOUR 34 MILLION, U R A TRUE PATRIOT
Using two subsidiaries, Dresser-Rand and Ingersoll-Dresser, Halliburton helped rebuild Saddam's war-damaged oil fields.  The combined value of these contracts for parts and equipment was greater than that of any other American company doing business with Iraq - like Schlumberger, Flowserve, Fisher-Rosemount, General Electric
They acted through foreign subsidiaries or associated companies in France, Belgium, Germany, India, Switzerland, Bahrain, Egypt and the Netherlands.  In several cases, it’s clear the European companies did no more than loan their names to American firms for the purpose of dealing with Hussein.  Iraq then became America's second-largest Middle Eastern oil supplier.
 
When
Cheney left Halliburton, he received a $34 million severance package despite the fact that the single biggest deal of his five-year
career there, the acquisition of
Dresser Industries, turned out to be a
huge blunder.

Baltimore Chronicle did not make the same choice.  When you publish and disseminate such hate filled rubbish as this it does nothing to make the world a better place and in fact has exactly the opposite effect.  Why not focus on writing which strives to bring about better understanding and communication between people instead of  offending people and inciting further violence and enmity in the world with the words that you send out?  I suggest a look to the Buddhist concept of Right Speech for guidance.

THE LOGIC OF EMPIRE:
THE US IS NOW A THREAT TO THE WORLD.
THE SENSIBLE RESPONSE IS NON-COOPERATION

There is something almost comical about the prospect of George Bush waging war on another nation because that nation has defied international law.
Since Bush came to office, the United States government has torn up more international treaties and disregarded more UN conventions than the rest of the world has in 20 years.
It has scuppered the biological weapons convention while experimenting, illegally, with biological weapons of its own.  It has refused to grant chemical weapons inspectors full access to its laboratories, and has destroyed attempts to launch chemical inspections in Iraq.  It has ripped up the anti-ballistic missile treaty, and appears to be ready to violate the nuclear test ban treaty.  It has permitted CIA hit squads to recommence covert operations of the kind that included, in the past, the assassination of foreign heads of state.  It has sabotaged the small arms treaty, undermined the international criminal court, refused to sign the climate change protocol and, last month, sought to immobilise the UN convention against torture so that it could keep foreign observers out of its prison camp in Guantanamo Bay.  Even its preparedness to go to war with Iraq without a mandate from the UN security council is a defiance of international law far graver than Saddam Hussein's non-compliance with UN weapons inspectors.

But the US government's declaration of impending war has, in truth, nothing to do with weapons inspections.  On Saturday John Bolton, the US official charged, hilariously, with "
arms control", told the Today programme that "our policy ... insists on regime change in Baghdad and that policy will not be altered, whether inspectors go in or not".  The US
government's justification for whupping Saddam has now changed twice.  At first, Iraq was named as a potential target because it was "
assisting al-Qaida".  This turned out to be untrue.  Then the US government claimed that Iraq had to be attacked because it could be developing weapons of mass destruction, and was refusing to allow the weapons inspectors to find out if this were so.  Now, as the promised evidence has failed to materialise, the weapons issue has been dropped.  The new reason for war is Saddam Hussein's very existence.  This, at least, has the advantage of being verifiable.  It should surely be obvious by now that the decision to wage war on Iraq came first, and the justification later.

Other than the age-old issue of oil supply, this is a war without strategic purpose.  The US government is not afraid of Saddam Hussein, however hard it tries to scare its own people.  There is no evidence that Iraq is sponsoring terrorism against America.  Saddam is well aware that if he attacks another nation with weapons of mass destruction, he can expect
to be nuked.  He presents no more of a threat to the world now than he has done for the past 10 years.

But the US government has several pressing domestic reasons for going to war.  The first is that attacking Iraq gives the impression that the flagging "
War On Terror" is going somewhere.  The second is that the people of all super-dominant nations love war.  As Bush found in Afghanistan, whacking foreigners wins votes.  Allied to this concern is the need to distract attention from the financial scandals in which both the president and vice-president are enmeshed.  Already, in this respect, the impending war seems to be working rather well.

The United States also possesses a vast military-industrial complex that is in constant need of conflict in order to justify its staggeringly expensive existence.  Perhaps more importantly than any of these factors, the hawks who control the White House perceive that perpetual war results in the perpetual demand for their services.  And there is scarcely a better formula for perpetual war, with both terrorists and other Arab nations, than the invasion of Iraq.  The hawks know that they will win, whoever loses.  In other words, if the US were not preparing to attack Iraq, it would be preparing to attack another nation.  The US will go to war with that country because it needs a country with which to go to war.

Tony Blair also has several pressing reasons for supporting an invasion.  By appeasing George Bush, he placates Britain's rightwing press.  Standing on Bush's shoulders, he can assert a claim to global leadership more credible than that of other European leaders, while defending Britain's anomalous position as a permanent member of the UN security council.  Within Europe, his relationship with the president grants him the eminent role of broker and interpreter of power.

By invoking the "
special relationship", Blair also avoids the greatest challenge any prime minister has faced since the second world war.  This
challenge is to recognise and act upon the conclusion of any objective
analysis of global power:
namely that the greatest threat to world peace
is not Saddam Hussein, but George Bush


The nation that in the past has been our firmest friend is becoming instead our foremost enemy.

As the US government discovers that it can threaten and attack other nations with impunity,
it will surely soon begin to threaten countries that have numbered among its allies.  As its insatiable demand for resources prompts ever bolder colonial adventures, it will come to interfere directly with the strategic interests of other quasi-imperial states.  As it refuses to take responsibility for the consequences of the use of those resources, it threatens the rest of the world with environmental disaster.  It has become openly contemptuous of other governments and prepared to dispose of any treaty or agreement that impedes its strategic objectives.  It is starting to construct a new generation of nuclear weapons, and appears to be ready to use them pre-emptively.  It could be about to ignite an inferno in the Middle East, into which the rest of the world would be sucked.

The United States, in other words, behaves like any other imperial power.  Imperial powers expand their empires until they meet with overwhelming resistance.

For Britain to abandon the special relationship would be to accept that this is happening. 
To accept that the US presents a danger to the rest of the world would be to acknowledge the need to resist it. Resisting the United States would be the most daring reversal of policy a British government has undertaken for over 60 years.

We can resist the US neither by military nor economic means, but we can
resist it diplomatically
The only safe and sensible response to American
power is a policy of non-cooperation.
  Britain and the rest of Europe should impede, at the diplomatic level, all US attempts to act unilaterally.  We should launch independent efforts to resolve the Iraq crisis and the conflict between Israel and Palestine.  And we should cross our fingers and hope that a combination of economic mismanagement, gangster capitalism and excessive military spending will reduce America's power to the extent that it ceases to use the rest of the world as its doormat.  Only when the US can accept its role as a nation whose interests must be balanced with those of all other nations can we resume a friendship that was once, if briefly, founded upon the principles of justice.
