Misinterpreting Osama's Message While media experts were preoccupied with analysing Osama bin Laden's voice, they failed to comprehend, or even read his actual words! Speculation about hidden meanings and secret clues totally ignored the obvious intended message, which is so clear that it doesn't even need decoding. The image of the ‘Enemy’ universally generates a powerful emotional charge that distorts perception. Our narrow range of thinking, so deeply ingrained, is shaped by a homogenous media, with constant repetition of a simplistic worldview, characterised by black-and-white thinking, egocentrism and psychological ignorance. Our inability to receive meaning is tantamount to a collective cognitive disorder. The ‘Enemy’ is seen as intent on destroying us, no matter what we do. Understandably, we fail to see that he is also feeling anguish and desperation. There is a serious threat to us, but the way we respond can either increase or decrease the threat. We tend to leave out our participation in this dynamic dance of terror. Shifting to a Survivable Paradigm Some people will misunderstand any attempt at psychologically sound ways of reducing the escalation of violence, which is about to spin out of control. Those committed to revenge/ punishment, even if it provokes retaliation that endangers us, will dismiss it. They’re operating on the axis of right and wrong, good and evil, us and them. They’ll always be right, but the violence will escalate. To escape the imminent cycle of retaliation, we need to operate from a new, transcendent paradigm principled upon tension reduction, violence prevention and conflict transformation. It’s off the right-wrong axis. When you’re threatened, your fates are intertwined, and understanding the psychology of the enemy becomes a matter of life and death. The Message of Reciprocity We have received three clear, consistent messages from bin Laden in the last year: on Nov. 11, 2001; Oct. 6, 2002; and Nov. 12, 2002. All are credible, plausible, and make psychological sense, AND ALL HAVE BEEN GROSSLY MISINTERPRETED. All three messages have a consistent theme, emotional tone and logic. All are about RECIPROCITY, expressed in many different ways. The message from Nov. 12, 2002, began, "The road to safety begins by ending the aggression. Reciprocal treatment is part of justice. The incidents that have taken place ... are only reactions and reciprocal actions. " I have not heard one commentator address this. The AOL headline for these excerpts said, "BIN LADEN VOWS TO ATTACK." Yet these communications contain vital information for our survival. Though bin Laden may be our arch enemy, it does not follow that we should not take his communications seriously, or accurately. Quite the reverse! Though Bush said on Nov. 13 that he would take bin Laden's messages seriously, his interpretation was the opposite of the true meaning. In fact the messages mean that IF WE GO TO WAR, WE WILL PROVOKE A CHAIN REACTION OF TERRORIST ATTACKS THAT WILL NOT OCCUR IF WE DON’T GO TO WAR. Everyone, from the CIA, political psychologists, terrorism experts, Middle East analysts and social psychologists, all agree that war will increase terrorism globally, as well as many other catastrophic unintended consequences. Bin Laden's conditional warnings are incorrectly misinterpreted as unconditional threats. What’s missed by media and political leaders, whether intentionally or unconsciously, is the centrality of our role in provoking or preventing retaliation. Bin Laden's quotes listed below all say that our actions will determine their actions. Yet entire commentaries are based on fragments taken out of context which create an irrational belief that we have to attack first to prevent this. Here are some of bin Laden's comments that were not reported in full. NOV. 11, 2001: Bin Laden said that he had nuclear weapons, but was holding them as a deterrent which he had no intention of using them unless we did. If the U.S. used them, he would reserve the right to use them in retaliation. Most media obsessed about whether or not he had them, and irresponsibly dismissed the possibility. Almost no one took this seriously enough to explore what we should do if he did. The psychologically correct response would have been to reduce tension by reassuring us and them that we had no intention of using nuclear weapons. SUN OCT 6, 2002: "By God, the youths of God are preparing for you things that would fill your hearts with terror and target your economic lifeline, until you stop your oppression and aggression against Muslims." News reports said bin Laden was threatening our economic lifeline, and planning an attack. We should understand that the overriding sentiment in bin Laden's messages is about the effects of our actions. This is credible. Reciprocity is guaranteed. There are two ways to get even. The way to be more secure is to make your enemy more secure. Envy and humiliation provoke destruction. Liberation from Retaliation We are on the verge of going to war under the illusion of preventing a threat. What has been sold as a "pre-emptive strike," a misuse of the term, is actually a provocative strike. This war will unleash a cascade of unintended consequences. Terrorist attacks are likely being planned now for the onset of war. Terrorism is a form of asymmetrical warfare and there’s no amount of domination that cannot be turned against us, as was demonstrated by Sept. 11. Attacking Afghanistan provoked al-Qaeda to decentralisation and better hiding. We have the illusion that if we kill bin Laden we will be safer, but is it not more likely that that killing him will magnify his power and influence? If we kill him then the terrorists will have won. We create the connection between Iraq and al-Qaeda; we are driving them into each other's arms. Osama has now suggested that if we invade Iraq, he will respond in kind. There is every reason to believe him. The only way to reduce terrorism is to address the root causes and to transform our use of power in the world. With asymmetrical warfare and weapons of mass destruction, the consequences of going to war are unthinkable. MUTUALLY ASSURED SURVIVAL: Erring on the Side of Caution Bush has unwittingly resurrected the policy of "Mutually Assured Destruction," MAD, except he’s replacing a posture of deterrence with provocation. We plan to attack you and your brethren. You have vowed to respond in kind. This will lead to a global version of the Israeli-Palestinian deteriorating cycle of retaliation. This is as dangerous as can be. When people are suffering and feel dominated, when they keep getting rejected and humiliated, they expel their suffering and trauma into others, especially the dominators and the envied. The alternative is a policy of "Mutually Assured Survival." Each side promises not to attack first. There’s nothing to lose by trying. If we assume we can't trust him, we will end up being right, as we provoke increased terrorism worldwide. If we consider his theme of reciprocity could be authentic, we could shift to strategies that will reduce tension, and have legitimacy in their own right. We are steamrolling down a path toward endless escalation of global violence and need to explore possible ways out. Throughout history, like the Cuban Missile Crisis, wise leaders were aware of the need to provide the enemy with face-saving ways out. If we go to war, we will create more Saddams and Osamas who will emerge in future years. The stakes are as high as can be. It will take major miracles to prevent this war, but we can start with consciousness. I end this by repeating bin Laden: "The road to safety begins by ending the aggression." The choice is ours. Unintended consequences inevitably overwhelm the short-term and narrow benefits of authoritarian programs designed to make the economic system fair, the people morally better, and the world safe for democracy. 100 years of intense U.S. government "benevolence" has brought us to the brink of economic collapse, a domestic police state, and perpetual war overseas. And now our obsession with conquering and occupying Iraq is about to unleash consequences no one can accurately foresee. The negative possibilities are unlimited and the benefits negligible. Some have warned that the planned pre-emptive invasion of Iraq could prove so destabilizing to the region and the world that it literally could ignite a worldwide conflict big enough to be called WORLD WAR III. Nuclear exchanges are perhaps even more likely to occur under the conditions of an expanded Middle east war than they were at the height of the Cold War, when the Soviets and U.S. had literally thousands of nuclear weapons pointed at each other. If we carry out our threats to invade and occupy Iraq, especially if we do so unilaterally, the odds are at least 50-50 that this worst case scenario will result. THE BEST-CASE SCENARIO would be a short war, limited to weeks and involving few American and Iraqi civilian casualties. This, in combination with a unified Iraqi welcome, the placing into power of a stable popular government that is long lasting, contributing to regional stability and prosperity, and free elections, is what our planners are hoping for. The odds of achieving this miraculous result are probably one in 10,000. More likely, the consequences will be severe and surprising and not what anyone planned for or intended. It’s likely to fall somewhere between the two extremes, but closer to the worst scenario than the best. SOME OTHER POSSIBLE SCENARIOS *** No local Iraqi or regional Arab support materializes. Instead of the hoped-for spontaneous uprising, the opposite occurs as even the Iraqi citizens anxious to get rid of Hussein join in his defence, believing foreign occupation and control of their oil is far worse. Sanctions have done precisely that. Far from blaming Saddam for the suffering of the past decade, Iraqi people blame the U.S.-led sanctions and the constant U.S. and British bombing. Hussein has increased his power. There are a lot of reasons to believe this same reaction will occur with an invasion attacks. *** Trained dissidents like the Iraqi National Congress will prove as unreliable as Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein when they qualified as U.S. "allies." *** Traditional enemies in the regions are prompted to create new alliances, as the hatred for America comes to exceed age-old hatreds that caused regional conflicts. Iraq has already made overtures and concessions to Iran and Kuwait, with some signs of conciliation being shown by both sides. Total domination of the entire Persian Gulf and the Caspian Sea regions by the U.S. will surely stir survival instincts in these countries as well as in Russia. As the balance of power continues to shift in the U.S.'s favour, there will be even more reasons for countries like China and Pakistan to secretly support the nations that are being subjected to U.S. domination in the region. The U.S. will never have a free ride in its effort to control the entire world's oil supply. Antagonisms are bound to build, and our ability to finance the multiple military conflicts that are bound to come is self-limited. *** The Kurds use the chaos to establish an independent state, thereby stirring the ire of the Turks and the Iranians. Instead of stability for northern Iraq, the war likely will precipitate more fighting than the war planners ever imagined. Delivering Kurdish Iraq to Turkey for its cooperation in the war will not occur without a heated and deadly struggle. Turkey is already deeply concerned about the prospect for Kurdish independence, and only remains loyal to America because U.S. taxpayers are forced to subsidize an already depressed Turkish economy caused by our Iraqi policies. More money will pacify for a while, but either frustration with the perpetual nature of the problem or America’s inability to continue the financial bailout will lead Turkey to have second thoughts. All of this raises the odds that Islamic radicals will once more take control of the Turkish government. These developing conditions increase the odds of civil strife erupting in Turkey. *** Islamic fundamentalism in the entire region gets a shot in the arm, especially in Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Turkey. Placing the Shah in power in Iran in the 50's was a major reason that the Ayatollah eventually made it to power in the late 70's a delayed but direct consequence of our policy. Balance of power in this area of the world has always been delicate, and outside interference serves only to destabilize. There's no evidence that America’s current efforts will lead to more stability. Promoting democracy, as it's described, is a farce. If elections were to occur in most of the Arab countries today, Osama bin Laden and his key allies would win. Besides, America seems to adapt quite well to working with military dictators that have ousted elected leaders Pakistan’s cooperation was rewarded with huge subsidies and future promises. *** Several countries grab the chance to move on their neighbours during any ensuing chaos. Already cooperation from Russia means an absence of American criticism or resistance to its moves in Georgia or Chechnya. China could attack Taiwan. North Korea could renew its struggle against South Korea. India may see an opportunity to settle the Kashmir dispute with Pakistan with the real risk of nuclear war. It seems the obsession about Iraq's improbable possession of nuclear weapons far exceeds the more realistic possibility that a pre-emptive strike against Iraq may precipitate a nuclear exchange between these two countries, or even a first strike with nuclear weapons by Israel against Iraq. *** Israel increases its settlements in the Palestinian homeland and possibly even in Lebanon during the chaos. And Israel's possession of nuclear weapons in a period of outright war will surely serve to intimidate her neighbours and intensify her efforts to further expand the Israeli homeland. *** More worldwide condemnation of America if massive Iraqi civilian casualties result, and even a UN resolution condemning what others will call American War Crimes. America’s refusal to be subject to the International Criminal Court, while demanding others be tried in the court, will never sit well with the world community. Its position is a far cry from what it ought to be demanding national sovereignty while promoting neutrality and friendship with all nations. *** An attack will more likely cause Saddam to use any massively lethal weapons he might have than if he’s not attacked, as the CIA has warned. They’ve also warned that the likelihood of al Qaeda attacks on American soil will increase. This, of course, could cause a wave of well-placed snipers around the United States. *** More than 150,000 U.S. servicemen are suffering from Persian Gulf War Syndrome as a result of the first Iraq War. A new one literally could create an epidemic of similar casualties, since the exact etiology is not completely understood. The number of deaths and injuries from an occupation of Iraq could be much higher than anyone wants to imagine. *** Anti Americanism now sweeping the world significantly increases. Already we’ve seen elections swayed in Europe, Turkey, and Pakistan by those unfriendly to the United States. The attitude that the world's "King of the Hill" must be brought down will escalate, especially if the war goes poorly and does not end quickly with minimal civilian deaths. *** Al Qaeda gets a real boost in membership. Already pervasive throughout the world without centralized control, there will almost inevitably be an explosion in membership and a negative global impact. An attack will confirm to the doubters that bin Laden was right in assessing America’s desire to control the Middle Eastern resources and dictate policy to the entire region while giving support to Israel over the Palestinians. *** America’s already very weak economy collapses with the additional burden of a costly war. A significant war will cause revenues to decrease, taxes to increase, inflation to jump, encourage trade wars, and balloon the deficit. Oil prices will soar and the dollar will retreat ever further. *** A military draft is instituted for both men and women for which demands are already being heard. This will serve as another source of domestic friction as the economy deteriorates and unemployment rises. Under these conditions the standard of living for all Americans is destined to go down. *** It will be seen as a Republican war plain and simple if it’s of any significant duration. Along with a weak economy, it could easily usher in a "regime change" here in the United States. The conditions may justify a change in leadership, but the return of control to the opposition party will allow them to use the opportunity to promote their domestic liberal agenda and socialize the entire economy. The net result, regardless of the size and duration of the coming war, will be that the American people will be less free and much poorer. The bigger the war, the greater will be the suffering. UP!
