SADDAM ATROCITIES SEXED UP!
HE’S AT IT AGAIN!
For months the UP! has been (cautiously) suggesting that MAYBE Saddam’s been demonised and his atrocities exaggerated. Now the truth is starting to come out! And not from the internet but from the right wing Mail On Sunday.
Faced with the collapse of his pre-war "intelligence" on Iraqi weapons of mass destruction, Tony Blair is falling back on Saddam Hussein’s human rights abuses. In the past 10 days, he’s said 3 times including in the House of Commons that the UN claims some 300,000 bodies lie in mass graves in Iraq, which “alone justifies the invasion”.
He’s at it again. He’s doing with this evidence exactly what he did with the intelligence about weapons of mass destruction. He’s stretching it to the limit, he’s even telling a partial untruth; he’s slithering past the bits which contradict his view; and he’s attributing an authority and reliability to information which it does not have.
First, the figure does not come from the UN. Blair has stressed that the figures does not come from the British or American governments, and has emphasised the UN as the source. But the real source is the private non-governmental American organisation Human Rights Watch. UN officials may have lent it credibility by quoting it in their speeches, but it is not a UN figure.
It’s not an official Red Cross figure either, the body responsible in international law for establishing the names of people missing in conflict. It’s not the role of a private, unaccountable organisation like ‘Human Rights Watch’. "We would not say there are 300,000 people missing in Iraq." Antonella Notari, a spokesman, told me.
Human Rights Watch currently has two staff in Iraq compared to 800 Red Cross staff, and a substantial UN presence.
The International Committee of the Red Cross has had people in Iraq ever since 1980.
The United Nations has had a huge operation there since 1991.
Human Rights Watch has had its few staff in the main part of Iraq for only the last few weeks.
Even more importantly, Blair’s implication that 300,000 (actually inflated from the Human Rights Watch figure of 290,000) is the number of people killed by Saddam is quite wrong. Not even Human Rights Watch claims this but speak of an estimated 290,000 missing, "many of whom are believed to have been killed". In other words, their deaths have not been established. And some (or even all) of them may be alive.
Indeed the methods used by Human Rights Watch to calculate these numbers are questionable.

How can you claim to have reliable information about missing people if you do not even know their names?!
APPALLING EXAGGERATIONS IN THE PAST
Human Rights Watch methods have led to appalling exaggerations of the numbers of people killed in conflicts in the past. In the Kosovo war of 1999, they stated categorically that the number of people killed unlawfully by the Serbs was "certainly" more than 4,300, that this was the number of bodies already actually exhumed. Moreover, Human Rights Watch claimed to have itself documented 3,453 killings, based on interviews.
The legal indictment against Slobodan Milosevic refers to 564 killed, not thousands.
In fact, the Human Rights Watch figures are not even their own figures. They come from other people. One of their main sources is... the Kurds in Northern Iraq! Neutral observers, yeah right. The Kurds have been fighting the Iraqis for their autonomy for 20 years, sided with Iran in the very bloody, decade-long Iran-Iraq war, and present Iraqi military action against their forces as "genocide", which Human Rights Watch also does.
Yet this presentation of the Kurds as passive victims is absurd. In 1996, when fighting broke out between the two Kurdish factions, one asked Saddam to send the Iraqi army to help, which he did. Moreover, my sources within one of the two groups confirm that the other has its own death squads, which it uses to eliminate political enemies. How many of these victims are Human Rights Watch or Tony Blair counting!?
Since the figures come from other people, even Human Rights Watch presents them as nothing other than estimates. While Tony Blair speaks as if it’s a firmly established figure, their report is massively hedged around with qualifiers. Now where have we seen that happen?!
Caution should also be exercised because of the unreliability of eye-witness accounts which have not been subject to judicial cross-examination. Human Rights Watch did not even begin to interview the witnesses of one of the worst alleged atrocities until over 4 years after the events. Some of the evidence is clearly unreliable. One report quotes a man saying, "They blindfolded us … and then they put us in Landcruisers with shaded windows." How could he know the make of car, or the colour of its windows, blindfolded? The same man claims he escaped from a mass grave, a tale I’ve heard too many times in Kosovo to easily swallow whole.
No one would deny that huge numbers of people have died in Iraq in the last two decades. The Iran-Iraq war claimed hundreds of thousands. The Americans killed huge numbers in the first Gulf War, sometimes bulldozing their bodies into mass graves.

Amnesty International reckons Saddam executed a few hundred people a year. But why exaggerate such an appalling level of violence? It is, incidentally, far below the rate we’ve killed Iraqi civilians in the war on Saddam - at least 6,000 in the last few months.

People do have an extraordinary tendency to exaggerate the figures whenever mass killing is alleged. In May, when a mass grave was discovered near the town of Hilla, the BBC correspondent said, "I have personally counted 200, 300 bodies." But which had he counted? 200 or 300? Within hours, the numbers were inflated from a few hundred to 3,000 and then to 10,000 or 15,000.
The official from Human Rights Watch alleged to me that "tens of thousands of bodies" had already been exhumed in Iraq. When I firmly pressed him on this, he admitted that the figure was, in fact, in the low thousands.
Tony Blair has come very close to his own political death by sexing up information about weapons. It seems he simply cannot get out of the habit where human rights abuses are concerned.

i didn’t defend saddam. i made a complex cultural argument wherein his seizure by forces whose potential (and actual) for destruction is far far greater could and maybe should be seen as a negative result for humanity. after all you could fairly argue that, since we the west CREATED him, we are (more indirectly) responsible for those 300,000 deaths AND MANY MANY MANY MANY MORE (more indirectly). no?
YEAR 2023 - perhaps if he hadn’t been captured at that moment, the Bush Gang would have lost the presidency, the general self-fulfilling paranoid psychosis they unleashed through the media they controlled would have died down, and the Twenty Year Terror War would stuttered to a halt right there.

Now we are torn over another issue. The Iraqis are suffering, the whole country and its economy are in tatters.

A P.S. with a MORAL = There’s a rather run-down shop the Venetian lagoon that sells hand-blown glassware. The CIA get this idea (probably from its rival down the street?) that the shop’s being used for spying and there are mikes and cameras hidden in the walls and, in the middle of the night, they break in, clear everything off the walls and ceiling, and check them thoroughly.
Next morning, as the shopkeeper stands there, open mouthed, gazing at the mound of broken glass remnants of his business, a CIA operatives says, "Sorry about that, we didn't find any microphones, but we did find this!", and proudly holds up one mangy rat.

The Problem is Chutzpah

We are told that the story of the Jews is one of ever-repeated persecution, that arises spontaneously and seemingly inevitably out of some kind of inherent flaw in (goy) humanity.
Well, it's time to study this history, and not be simply fed it by those with fantastic ulterior motives - as we have realized it's time to study the Israel/Palestine issue, and not be simply fed an interpretation by one side of it.
Can this history be found? It can. It needs diligence and true objectivity, however. One has to have one's guard up, of course, vis-à-vis one-sided preferential interpretation. Most (though not all) that I have found is written by Jews and is especially accommodating to Jewish-defensive interpretation.
It seems bizarre of course that some people would be attacked all the time just because they were what - different? They were attacked by people who usually didn't have much. Why would these attackers waste their limited resources so much on attacking Jews? Why would nature (the-survival-of-the-fittest?) gear them up to waste themselves so on senseless attacks?
Another obvious question to ask is, "Has something like what has happened to Jews happened to anybody else?" In this regard I’m reminded of an article I once read in the (wonderful) National Geographic magazine. It was an article about a rural area in western Canada. There was a sect (Christian) of people who were very tight-knit. Their many families lived and cooperated together on the same large farms as a unit (like a commune or kibbutz). Other people living in the region had great animosity toward the people of this sect. Yet no wrongdoing was associated with them. It seems to me they evoked hostility merely because they worked at an advantage relative to other people.
From all that I have read it seems the Jews are "guilty" of operating at an advantage relative to other people: the advantage of inherent chutzpah (my dictionary says it's from the Yiddish, meaning "gall, brazenness"). If ever there was a word explaining the entire advent of the Israel/Palestine conflict that would be it!
If Jews have been simply disliked, why did this dislike occur time and again only after a period of warmth and cooperation with Gentiles? Jews in early 14th century Spain were prominent in positions of privilege and power and intermixed with, even married, the natives. LATER, sentiment against Jews arose. Jews were prominent in the Weimar regime of Germany. There was much intermixing of Jews and Germans. LATER, sentiment against Jews arose.
Similarly in the USSR and the Soviet satellites.
Somehow repeatedly the non-Jews got quite fed up with the Jews. Even in texts written by Jews there are hints why. Daniel Jonah Goldhagen’s book Hitler's Willing Executioners: Ordinary Germans and the Holocaust, contains references by contemporary "antisemites" to "wealth (Jews) amassed through thieving and cheating" (to which Palestinians can relate) and the idea that Jewish absence would "make the German people again the master in its own house" (to which Americans can relate).
We hear always that pogroms and persecutions took place. Rarely do we get a glimpse of what motivated them. But, briefly, in his book The Fatal Embrace: Jews and the State, Benjamin Ginsberg mentions Czechoslovakians being irritated by "tremendous influence" of Jews and "animosities" caused by "Jews in the government" being cited as the cause of a pogrom in Poland.
The Fatal Embrace importantly observes that Jews, through the centuries of their diaspora, frequently have assumed unpopular and coercive roles in government, such as that of tax collector and inspector. They characteristically have striven for positions within the frameworks of power. They have tended to be partisan, moreover, forming close ties with particular regimes; these ties would haunt them when regime change later occurred. Jews were highly associated with Soviet block Communism, being mutually supportive.
These, and many other, references and my own personal observations indicate that Jews strive at life, at progress and prosperity, with exceptional gusto. Their drive and assertiveness is overweening to non-Jews and puts non-Jews at a considerable relative disadvantage. Therein lies the problem. They're just too pushy, they're hard to compete with.
Observing this, and determining to protect against Nazi-type actions, what should we do? Give the Jews a state of their own? What sense would this make? Why would you take high-performance people and put them in a team of their own? A super team that in a global community would outcompete and annoy the rest of us.
And, indeed, this is exactly what they have done. They've mastered an intricate task that Arabs have only just begun to realize exists: making America do exactly what they want AND with essentially no one who matters cognizant of it. (America is being plundered psychologically, as well as materially, and generally neither Americans nor their Arab foes recognise it.)
In fact, what we have seen happen in Palestine is what you would expect if the problem was not (mindless) persecution of Jews, but a big dose of innate Jewish chutzpah.
